Friday Thoughts December 1st

Posted on Dec 01, 2016

Dear Parents,

Kane Hall is ready to be transformed into Santa’s Workshop for Christmas Crafts tonight at 5:30.  It is always great fun to see the masterpieces our young artisans create.  This event is sure to put you in the Christmas Spirit.    There will also be a small scale book fair available tonight…Books make wonderful gifts for children.

Please remember there is no school tomorrow because of the faculty in-service.

If you ordered Spirit Wear, it may be picked up today after school or Monday before school.

On Sunday, all are invited to the 10:00 Mass where St. Nicholas will be making a guest appearance and have a treat for all of the children after Mass.    This is the second Sunday in Advent and we, as a school community, have challenged ourselves to be sure to attend Mass each of the Sundays prior to Christmas.

When you come to Mass, you are invited to take a tag from our giving tree in the back of Church.  The tag holds some information about a child or adult in Robbins for whom we would like to provide a gift at Christmas.  One of our parish outreach programs is the Pro Labore Dei mission in Robbins.    Each month a group of volunteers brings sandwiches and serves lunch at the mission.   Our Christmas project will allow us to provide gifts for the families who come to the mission.  We ask that all gifts be wrapped with a tag identifying if it is for a boy or girl and the age range for which it is appropriate.  Gifts can be returned to school, put under the tree in church, or brought to the rectory.  Our deadline is Friday, December 16.

Another sure sign of Christmas will be the band concert on Tuesday.  Our young musicians have practiced for weeks in preparation for the show.  All are welcome at 1:45 in the gym.  The band will also be “in concert”, the following Tuesday, December 13, when our musicians will join elementary school bands from several schools for a concert at Marist.   Again, all are welcome.

Our Kindergarten classes will be attending a special Christmas show at McAuley on Tuesday, December 6.

Wednesday, December 7, is Special Lunch Day.

On Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 7 and 8, Las Fuentes Restaurant is sponsoring family nights.  A generous rebate will be given to the school for any take-out or full service meals at the restaurant.

On Thursday, December 8th, we celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.  There will be an all-school mass at 10 a.m.

As local stores are doing the countdown of shopping days till Christmas, please remember the ease of shopping through our MANNA program.   You can purchase gift cards to use for your shopping or as perfect gifts for so many on your gift list.   Check the school website for a list of both the “cash and carry” cards that are available and the special order cards that can be ordered with just a few days notice.  Best of all, think about the tuition rebate you will receive because you shopped at MANNA.

With so much chaos in our world, it is easy to forget about the peace and joy of Christmas.   If ever you   doubted the importance of the values we want our kids to have, please consider a few ideas from our sixth graders.   Mrs. Gavin’s Religion classes recently completed their study of the story of Solomon who, as you remember, had the opportunity to choose any gift he wanted, wealth, fame etc.   With no prompting, Mrs. Gavin asked her students to consider what gift they would most desire to have.  Although a small minority named iPhones and millions, the vast majority seem to have the “wisdom of Solomon” already.  A few responses:
I would request the power to give joy and happiness to all
I would ask God to bless my family and give them long lives and remain healthy, this includes
                    our family pet.
I would ask for more kindness so I can get along with my siblings.
I would ask for a big heart so I would always be nice to people.
I would ask for wisdom so when I need to make a hard choice I can have God help me decide.
I would ask for world peace because there is too much violence going on in the world.
I would ask God to make me a nicer person.
I would request the sense to know when someone needs help because helping is the right thing
                      to do.
I would ask God to have my aunt back, I miss her.

Happy December!
