Friday Thoughts February 24th

Posted on Feb 24, 2017

Dear Falcon Families,

What a beautiful week of Spring-like weather we had.  The kids truly enjoyed the opportunity to have outdoor recess in the middle of February.

Today marks the end of the second trimester.  (Where has the time vanished?)   Students will receive their report cards on Wednesday.   Please take a few minutes to compliment so much excellent effort where it is evident and to challenge a fresh start for the final trimester.  If you have a question or concern, please notify your child’s teacher.  Please also remember that all tuition has to be up to date in order for your child to receive his report card.  We are grateful for your help in helping us balance our budget each month.

Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent.  Our focus this year for our “alms giving” is to help support the children and families with whom we work at the Robbins Center.  Look for more details next week.   All are welcome for mass and the distribution of ashes at 10:00 on Wednesday.

A dear cousin of mine had a wonderful Lenten family practice that has become a rich tradition.  Each year she polled her now adult children for suggestions on what they would like to do for Lent.  Her suggestion:  Do, Don’t Do, and Pray For.  Since we share a genetic strain about doing better with short term goals, each week, we were instructed to DO one thing for someone else, NOT DO something that would be a little sacrifice, and PRAY FOR a specific person, persons, or cause that we wanted to hold in our prayer that week.   Over the years, the practice has really helped me focus better on the season of Lent.   Try it… Talk to your kids about what you might want to do together to accomplish the three weekly goals.  Change them each week so that they are fresh (and so are you).     Let me know if it works for you.

We are very happy to be co-hosting the Pancake Breakfast on Sunday from 8-noon in Kane Hall.  As you know, all proceeds go to the Behind the Vest Campaign.  We also welcome you to come to the 10:00 Mass on Sunday where we will salute our men and women in blue. Hope you can make it.  (Previous experience affirms the breakfast is delicious!)

Thanks for helping make our “Penny Wars” project so successful.   We will be presenting a check for $2,500 to the Behind the Vest campaign on Sunday.

County Fair is already advertising its famous corned beef.  We are also anticipating St. Patrick’s Day with a family corned beef dinner next Saturday, March 4,  after the 4:00 Mass.    Cost per family is only $30.00.  A cash bar will also be available.  Highlighting the night will be several Irish dancing groups and a soda bread contest.

We are also anticipating St. Patrick’s Day with our participation in the South Side Irish Parade on Sunday, March 12.   Plan now to show your school and parish pride by walking down Western with the SJF float.

Have a great week and a happy Lent.
