Friday Thoughts October 20 2017

Dear Falcon Families,

Halloween is second only to Christmas when it comes to excitement in the air in any school. Plans for great costumes, paths for trick or treating, and the promise of bags of treats top the agenda of most of our students. We may not be haunted, but we are happy!

The weekend ahead will be busy. All are cordially invited to our first family mass of the school year at 10:00 on Sunday. Donuts on the lawn will be served after Mass. I hope you will be able to come.

This is an exciting weekend for our sports teams. On Saturday, our Junior Varsity football team, the number one seed in the league, will play Queen of Martyrs at 3:00 at St. Laurence High School. On Sunday, the Varsity team plays St. Cajetan at St. Rita High School at 5:30. Last week the team had a stunning victory when they defeated second seed team, St. Christina. Both games promise to be very exciting and we welcome a large and enthusiastic cheering section. GO FALCONS!

Before football, families can also attend the 19th Ward Halloween Celebration at the Ag. School. That event also promises to be great fun.

If you have a student in pre-school –third grade, I hope they told you about our participation in the Read for the Record event yesterday. Our young readers joined with millions of children around the world to study the book QUAKERS by Liz Wong. This is a delightful story about understanding, acceptance, and learning to accept whoever you want to be.

Looking ahead, all families are invited to submit a pumpkin for our pumpkin alley contest. If you choose to participate, please bring your “finished product” decorated pumpkin to Kane Hall on Wednesday morning, Oct. 25, between 7:30 and 7:50. Students will view the pumpkins and vote for their favorites. Be your creative best!

On Thursday, the kindergarten students travel to Guaranteed Rate Field (Sox Park) for a tour of the facility. The kids are treated royally when they go and the chaperones also have a great time.

There are still a few spots open for Trivia Night on Saturday, Nov. 4. If you are a Jeopardy fan or loved the game Trivial Pursuit, gather a team and come for what promises to be a very entertaining evening. If you have questions about the event, just let us know.

We are still collecting Box Tops for Education. With 700 students and their families eating cereal and all of the other products that have the coupon on top, the school can earn a significant amount of money with the collection of the box tops.

And please don’t forget about MANNA. Our goal this year is to increase sales by 25% and Christmas is a perfect time to help achieve that goal. Remember, DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT YOUR MANNA CARDS.

A friend who has mastered the fine art of Pinterest, sent a quote last week: Live in such a way that if your children are ever asked for the definition of kindness, integrity and loyalty, they will answer, “my parents”. Thank you for the example you set for your kids. You are challenged to be both their biggest fans and cheerleaders and when necessary, their toughest critics. Thank you for encouraging each to his or her best self and to always BE KIND.

Have a great weekend. I hope to see you at the Family Mass on Sunday.
