Friday Thoughts December 8 2017

Posted on Dec 08, 2017

Dear Falcon Families,

I think support from the theater goers at SJF will ensure that the movie, WONDER, wins an Oscar. We had a great all school field trip on Wednesday. 600 movie critics agreed the movie was great. (Promise yourself you will see it if you have the chance.) One of my favorite images of the day was the kindergarten students who truly enjoyed the fact that all of the seats at the Crestwood Theaters are recliners… A theater full of tiny feet in the air was a great sight.

Although the preschoolers did not accompany us to the theater, they attended a special Christmas show at McAuley earlier in the week and enjoyed having the run of the building including extra gym time while we were gone.

The sixth graders also attended a production of the famous “Christmas Carol” at St. Rita High School on Thursday. Christmas in surely in the air at 10200.

Many thanks to all who helped with two very successful pre-Christmas events last weekend. The boutique night featured very unique vendors and a good opportunity to find some perfect gifts. On Sunday, Kane Hall was filled with young artisans creating beautiful handmade gifts that will be memory makers for years to come…. Glue and glitter with a healthy sprinkling of chocolate donuts made the day very special.

With just two weeks left before the Christmas break, please remember the following.

Our toy collection ends next Wednesday, December 13. Please send a wrapped present for a child the same age as your children. We will be sending all of the collected gifts to Robbins where we work with the Pro Labore Dei project to help our neighbors in that area.

If you have an extra dollar (or two) could you also send it in an envelope marked “special family.” There was a horrific fire in Robbins that left a mother and her three children with nothing. In an attempt to save her children, the mother was

severely burned and is in a local burn unit. Her three children are living with a grandmother who has little to share. We would like to create a special Christmas box of gift cards for this family. Thanks as always for your help and generosity.

Look for an important letter coming home (YES, IT IS A PAPER LETTER!) that outlines a new streamlined way to order lunch. Our friends at St. Barnabas, who share the same lunch provider, have used the system with great success. Please also check the January lunch schedule because we will now have chocolate or white milk available every day for the students. The option to order milk is part of the lunch menu. If you have questions about the program, please email Mrs. Maxwell at dmaxwell@sjfshool.net.

The anticipation of Christmas is highlighted for the students each Sunday during Advent. This week, we are honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe. All are also invited to stay for a few minutes after the 10:00 Mass for the family rosary.

We also have Children’s Liturgy of the Word each Sunday at the 10:00 Mass. Children are invited to go to a designated area where the Scripture Readings are shared and “discussed”. Our young church goers seem to love the program. It also provides a bit of quiet time for Mom and Dad.

If you are out of ideas for Christmas gifts, please remember that MANNA gift cards from scores of merchants are available and make great gifts. If you are entertaining during the holidays, be sure to purchase gift cards from all of the local food stores and Binny’s

As a special service to our families, we are having a MANNA BONUS CHRISTMAS SALE each morning from Dec. 18-Dec.22. In addition to regular sales hours in the convent, our Manna sales ladies will be available from 7:45 -8:30 each morning in the school conference room. Even if you are not a registered MANNA customer, you can purchase gift cards on a cash (or check) and carry basis. This sale is for your convenience and as a mini-fundraiser for the school. If you are purchasing gift cards avoid the crowds and shop at SJF. Remember we have both VISA and Amazon cards as well as countless retail and local shops and restaurants. If you have a question, please call.

When we returned from the theater this week, each student received a book mark reflecting the theme of the movie and our Advent theme. In case you did not see it:

Pledge to be KIND

IF every single person in this school made it a rule that wherever you are, whenever you can, you will try to act a little kinder than is necessary, the world really would be a better place. R.T. Palacio

Have a good week ahead.
