Friday Thoughts Feb 23 2018

Posted on Feb 23, 2018

Dear Falcon Families,

What an amazing outpouring of love and respect we witnessed last weekend as our community stood shoulder to shoulder as an honor guard for the funeral procession of Commander Paul Bauer.  The amazing letter his wife wrote to the people of Chicago captured the emotion of the day and affirmed the basic goodness of the people in this community.   We were filled with an overwhelming sense of sadness and yet by coming together, we affirmed that good will always overcome evil, that there is strength in numbers, and that love is stronger than hate.

Sunday’s Pancake breakfast only underscored the strength of this community.   I was SO proud of the scores of parish volunteers who were here on Saturday for set up and who came before dawn on Sunday to start cooking.  I was so proud of the teachers and students who decorated Kane Hall so beautifully, I was so proud of the hundreds who came for breakfast and supported the event so generously.  I was so proud that your generosity for our Friday Support the Vest Day Bingo allowed us to present a check for $2,500.00 for this most worthy cause.  THANK YOU!  I doubt that there is any community in the country that could have rallied the way ours did last weekend.

Our “lockdown” yesterday went very well.  Although no one ever wants to think we would have to go into lockdown mode, our kids responded very well.  (The preschoolers were so prepared and unafraid they asked to play “lockdown” during playtime later!).

If you think you qualify for the new tax credit scholarship, please check the Empower Illinois website.   They have established a new window for application, but it is essential that you register on Feb. 27.   The system malfunctioned because of overload several weeks ago but the Empower Illinois company has re-tooled and re-checked and can almost guarantee it will function well this time.

Tomorrow night is Comedy Night, a complete sell-out event…  Many thanks to all who have helped make this party so successful.

I apologize that the attachment for making an appointment for a grade level of sports physical is not yet available.  We will send it is a separate email as soon as we have it.    Remember that all students entering preschool, kindergarten, sixth and ninth grade must have a physical.   Parents who are already using the clinic report excellent reviews.  A bonus is that the visit is FREE!

Congratulations to our fifth grade girls’ red volleyball team who are playing for the Conference Championship at 6:00 on Sunday at Marist.   Please come to be part of an enthusiastic Falcon cheering section.

Additional Congratulations to a team of eighth grade boys, THE TIDE PODS, who won a trivia contest at Marist last night.   Team members included Matt Walsh, Quinn O’Boyle, Mike Golden, Billy McNicholas, Brendan DeMay and Tom McGuire.

We are strongly encouraging all of our students to try to come for Mass on the weekends during Lent, especially.  Hope you can help us with this “practice”.

Have a great weekend.
