Expectations Our typical week will consist of three days of classroom learning, one day of Accelerated Math, which is a computer-based learning program that ties into the academic curriculum and meets the Illinois Learning Standards for Mathematics, and one day of technology activities or other math projects. We will begin our year with a review of fractions, decimals and percents, which are very important in mastering upcoming topics related to pre-algebra and geometry. We will then move on to the regular 8th grade curriculum, focusing on topics covered heavily on the high school entrance exam earlier in the year. These include percents, probability, geometry, and integers. Math homework will consist of a packet with a timeframe of approximately two to three weeks to complete. There also may be occasional nightly homework in addition to the packets. As a mother of three, I am fully aware that 8th graders have busy lives, and are trying to juggle sports, social activities, clubs, family and more. I believe that homework packets will provide students with the flexibility to do the work according to their own schedules. I do believe that homework is an important element in reinforcing and mastering classroom topics, and fully expect each student to turn the homework packet in on time or early.Students are expected to thoroughly complete homework and turn it in on time. Students should also plan on spending a fair amount time studying for quizzes and tests. There will be a requirement set for each class for objective completion per quarter -- these minimum requirements must be met. The math program is challenging, and students will need to work extra hard to earn an A. It is designed to be challenging to help prepare the students for high school math classes. I am available every morning before school for extra help as needed. |
