Ms. Cathy Browne, Junior High Math

Welcome to Jr. High Math! My name is Cathy Browne and this is my 7th year at St. John Fisher. I am excited to be working with your child in 7th and 8th grade math. We are going to have a terrific year!

The Week of October 31st - November 4th

Posted on Oct 31, 2016

Happy Halloween!    Students may wear orange or black on Monday!

8th Grade:

Monday is Accelerated Math.  This week we complete our unit on slope and rate of change.  We will finish the unit learning how to interrupt the rate of change as slope. Students in class period 8 will take their quiz on this unit on Friday, November 4th.  Students in class periods 7 and 8 will take their unit quiz on Monday, November 7th.

7th Grade:

Monday is Accelerated Math.  On Tuesday, we continue working with unit rates and recognizing and representing proportional relationships between quantities. We will finish the week graphing proportional relationships. Our quiz on this unit is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, November 8th

The Week of October 23rd - October 28th

The Week of October 24th – October 28th

8th Grade:  This week we will be working with rate of change and slope.  We will determine the rate of change from two values using a table or graph. Next, we will calculate slope.  First, we will calculate slope using “rise” over “run”.  Next, we will use points on a graph to calculate slope.

7th Grade:  The week we continue working with unit rates.  We will compute unit rates associated with ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in different units. Next, we will recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities. We will also learn how to determine the constant of proportionality using a table or a graph.

REMINDERS:

Tuesday, October 18th is our retreat at St. Rita High School.  Students should bring a “brown bag” lunch on Tuesday to bring to the retreat.

Wednesday, October 22nd is the first of our two high school options days.  Representatives and former SJF students from the co-ed schools will be here to talk to the Jr High about their schools.

8th Grade

This week we begin our unit on proportional relationships. The first part of the week we will analyze and create proportional relationships using tables, graphs and equations.  The second part of the week we will work with rate of change, independent and dependent variables, and slope.

7th Grade:

This week we begin our unit on rates and proportionality.  We will spend the week working with ratios, rates, and unit rates. We will focus on finding units rates and using them in “real world” situations.

The Week of October 10th - October 14th

The Week of October 10th – October 14th

8th Grade:

Our unit test on real numbers, exponents, and scientific notation will take place this week.  Students in class period 8 will take their tests on Wednesday, October 12th.  Students in class periods 6 & 7 will take their tests on Friday, October 14th.  We will complete a study guide in class to help prepare for the test.  Additional practice problems are available on Google Classroom.

7th Grade:

On Tuesday, we will complete our unit on operations with rational numbers. Our unit test will be on Friday, October 14th.  We will complete a study guide in class to help prepare for the test.  Additional practice problems from the unit are available on Google Classroom.

The Week of October 3rd - October 7th

Reminder – Picture Day is Tuesday, October 4th!

8th Grade:

Monday is Accelerated Math.  On Tuesday, we will begin working with operations using scientific notation. First, we learn how to add and subtract numbers using scientific notation.  Next, we will learn how to multiply and divide numbers using scientific notation.  Our unit test, covering rational and irrational numbers, as well as exponents and scientific notation, is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, October 13th.  Students will receive a study guide to help prepare for the test. Additional practice problems will also be available on Google Classroom.

**8th Grade Integers Review**

Operation with integers is an important part of a number of the topics studied in 8th grade.  Those students who would like a review of adding and subtracting integers may attend one of two sessions where we will review and work on problems.  Students may attend either one of the following sessions: Tuesday, October 4th at 7:30 a.m.   OR    Thursday, October 6th at 2:30 p.m.

7th Grade:

Monday is Accelerated Math.  We will spend the remainder of the week working with rational numbers.  We will work with all operations using fractions and decimals.  We will complete this section on Friday and begin reviewing for our unit test, which will include all operations with integers and rational numbers. Our unit test will be Thursday, October 13th.  Students will receive a study to help prepare for the test.  Additional practice problems will also be available on Google Classroom.
