Welcome to Jr. High Math! My name is Cathy Browne and this is my 7th year at St. John Fisher. I am excited to be working with your child in 7th and 8th grade math. We are going to have a terrific year!

# Ms. Cathy Browne, Junior High Math

## The Week of September 26th - September 30th

Reminder-St. Rita Retreat Permission Slips are due Friday, September 30^{th}.

**8 ^{th} Grade: **

Monday is Accelerated Math. On Thursday, we will have a quiz on the properties of integer exponents. There will be practice problems to help prepare for the quiz on Google Classrom. All other days of the week will be spent expressing numbers using scientific notation with positive powers of 10 and negative powers of 10. We will also learn to translate between scientific notation and standard notation.

**7 ^{th} Grade**

Monday is Accelerated Math. We will have a quiz on multiplying and dividing integers on Wednesday. There are practice problems to help prepare for the quiz on Google Classroom. We will then begin our next unit on rational numbers. We will learn the properties of rational numbers and convert rational numbers to decimals using division.

## The Week of September 19th - September 23rd

**8 ^{th} Grade**

We continue this week working with properties of integer exponents. We will review the zero exponent and negative exponent properties. We will work with multiplication and division with exponents, as well as the power to a power property. Next, we will use scientific notation to represent very large and very small quantities.

*7 ^{th} Grade*

This week we learn how to multiply and divide integers. We will discuss the relationship between multiplication and division and discover why division by zero is not possible. We will finish the week combining all four operations with integers to solve “real world” problems. This week will also include a review of order of operations. We will have a quiz on multiplying and dividing integers the early part of next week.

## The Week of September 12th - September 16th

Monday we begin the Accelerated Math program. Accelerated Math is a program that allows students to work independently and review of topics previously taught in class. We will typically work on Accelerated Math in class every other Monday.

**8 ^{th} Grade**

** Periods 6 and 7:** Monday is Accelerated Math. On Tuesday, students in will take the Unit 1 - Real Numbers Quiz. On Wednesday, we begin our Exponents and Scientific Notation unit. First, we will learn about the properties of integer exponents. We will learn the rules to use when working with negative exponents and when multiplying similar bases with different exponents.

** Period 8: ** Monday is Accelerated Math. On Tuesday, we begin our Exponents and Scientific Notation unit. We will learn the rules to use when working with negative exponents and when multiplying similar bases with different exponents. Next, we will learn the rules to use when dividing similar bases. We will finish the week working with positive powers of 10.

**7 ^{th} Grade**

Monday is Accelerated Math. We will take our quiz on Adding and Subtracting Integers (Unit 1) this week. Period 1 will take the quiz on Tuesday; Periods 2 and 5 will take the quiz on Wednesday. We will spend the rest of the week working on our next unit, multiplying and dividing integers.

## The Week of September 5th - September 9th

**8 ^{th} GRADE**

This week we continue working with real numbers. We will compare and order irrational and rational numbers. We will also approximate irrational numbers and locate them on a number line. Our Unit 1 – Real Numbers quiz will be at the end of this week. Period 8 students will take the quiz on Thursday, September 8^{th}. Periods 6 and 7 students will take their quiz on Friday, September 9th.

** 7 ^{th} GRADE**

We continue working with integers this week. First, we will learn how to subtract integers. Next, we will solve “real-world” problems using addition and subtraction of integers. Students in Period 1 will take their Unit 1 – Adding and Subtracting Integers Quiz on Friday, September 9^{th}. Students in Periods 2 and 5 will take their Unit 1 quiz on Tuesday, September 13^{th}.
