Ms. Cathy Browne, Junior High Math

Welcome to Jr. High Math! My name is Cathy Browne and this is my 7th year at St. John Fisher. I am excited to be working with your child in 7th and 8th grade math. We are going to have a terrific year!

The Week of March 27th - March 31st

The Week of March 27th-March 31st

8th Grade:

Monday is Accelerated Math. On Tuesday, we begin our unit on transformations and congruence.  We will start by learning how to describe the properties of translation and their effect on the congruence and orientation of figures. Next, we will work with describing the properties of reflection and their effect on the congruence and orientation of figures.

7th Grade:

Monday is Accelerated Math.  On Tuesday, we will spend some time calculating the volume of 3-dimensional figures. Next, we will begin working with circles.  We will start by finding the circumference off a circle. Then we will learn how to find the area of a circle.

The Week of March 20th - March 24th

8th Grade:

This week we conclude our unit on functions. On Monday and Tuesday, we will be analyzing graphs. We will work on describing a relationship given a graph and sketching a graph given a description. On Wednesday, we will begin reviewing the unit.  Students will be work on a study guide to help prepare for the test.  Our test will be Friday, March 24th.

7th Grade:

This week we continue working on surface area and volume of polyhedrons. We will work with triangular prisms, rectangular prisms, trapezoidal prisms, and cubes. Next, we will begin working with circles.  We will start by finding the circumference of a circle.  Students will have a quiz on Thursday, March 23rd covering area and perimeter of polygons and composite shapes.

The Week of March 13th - March 17th

8th Grade:

Monday is Accelerated Math. On Tuesday, we continue comparing functions written as an equation or a table. We will also compare functions represented as a graphs. Next, we will write function rules given a table or real-world situation. We will finish the week analyzing graphs.

7th Grade:

Monday is Accelerated Math.  On Tuesday, we will continue working with the surface area of cubes, rectangular prisms, and triangular prisms. Next, we will learn how to calculate the surface area of composite figures. We will finish the week solving volume problems. We will start with the volume of a triangular prism.

The Week of March 6th - March 10th

8th Grade:

We continue this week working with functions. We will start the week learning what characteristics we can use to describe functions. We will learn to identify linear functions and non-linear functions. Next, we will graph functions.  We will finish the week comparing functions written as equations to functions represented by tables. We will have a quiz on Thursday, March 9th.  The quiz will cover identifying the domain and range of a relation and creating a function table.

7th Grade:

We continue this week calculating the area of composite figures. Next, we will find the surface are of prisms and composite solids. We will have a quiz on Thursday, March 9th, covering polygons and solving for the missing angles of triangles and quadrilaterals. Google classroom will have a list of the vocabulary terms students will need to know for the quiz.
