Ms. Courtney Garrity, Fourth Grade

Hello and welcome back! My name is Ms. Garrity and I am looking forward to beginning another school year here at St. John Fisher. This is my fifth year here at SJF, and I'm excited to be working with your child in fourth grade this year. Here are a few facts about me. I have worked at a school that specializes in Special Education. I received my teaching degree in Elementary Education from St. Xavier University. I love playing volleyball and watching Chicago sports teams, especially the Blackhawks. I have always had a passion for working with children from working at summer camps to teaching here at SJF. Even though I have just begun my career in the field of education, I continue to love teaching children and helping students to achieve their full potential. I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer! I'm looking forward to meeting you all on August 21, 2018! We are going to have a fantastic school year!

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!

In Reading this week, we will be continuing to focus on our novel: Secrets of Bearhaven as well as beginning to focus on our third story in Unit 2: I Love Guinea Pigs. Our skill that we will be focusing on this week is: Text Structure. *Students will have their Reading test on Friday, November 4th.* Students should study their vocabulary, notes and comprehension questions for the test on Friday. We will also be practicing SLAM this week.

*A variety of different book reports will be assigned throughout the school year in Reading. Students will be assigned their third book report this week. Students will also receive their November Book Report forms with the format this week. For this third “November Book Report,” students may choose a fiction book of their choice. Students are encouraged to turn in their book reports early, before the scheduled due date, if they are ready to be turned in.

*Also, students will be required to read and take quizzes on 8 books per trimester for Accelerated Reading. At least 1 of the 8 total books for the trimester needs to be a nonfiction book. There will also be due dates within the trimester for how many books should be read and AR quizzes taken.

4th Grade – Accelerated Reader – Due Dates for the 1st Trimester:

2 books and AR quizzes were due by Thursday, September 15th.

2 more books were due (total of 4 books all together) and AR quizzes by this past Friday, September 30th.

2 more books were due (total of 6 books all together) and AR quizzes by Friday, October 14th.

*2 more books are due (total of 8 books all together) – All 8 books and AR quizzes for the trimester (including at least one non-fiction book) are due by this upcoming Friday, November 4th.*

In Social Studies last week, we began our study of Lesson 1 in our first unit of our textbook. This week, we will continue focusing on our first lesson of Unit 1 in our textbook. *We will have a quiz on Lesson 1 on Wednesday, November 2nd.* Students should study their notes, vocabulary, and review questions in preparation for the quiz on Wednesday.

In Spelling this week, we will begin with our Unit 10 spelling words. We will have our tenth spelling test this Friday, November 4th on Unit 10.

  • UNICEF baggies for donations are due back by Monday, October 31st.
  • Also, Friday Folders will go home this week. Please look over the contents of the folder and discuss your child's progress with him/her. You may keep the quizzes/tests that are in the folder. Also, the Friday Folder should be signed and returned on Monday.

In Spelling this week, we will begin with our Unit 9 spelling words. We will have our ninth spelling test this Friday, October 28th on Unit 9.

We will also be reviewing and practicing locating different places on a map using these concepts. *Students will have their Map Skills Unit Test this week, on Tuesday, October 18th, that will focus on Hemispheres, Cardinal Directions, Latitude and Longitude.* Students should study their grids, notes, practice coordinate problems, and review worksheets in preparation for the unit test on Tuesday.

In Spelling this week, we will begin with our Unit 8 spelling words. We will have our eighth spelling test this Friday, October 21st on Unit 8.

Hello!

I hope everyone had a wonderful 3-day weekend and enjoyed the day off!

*We all really enjoyed the author visit last week! The fourth graders were very excited to learn more about the Secrets of Bearhaven book series from the author of the series, K.E. Rocha. Students enjoyed a fun and interactive presentation about the book series, learned some interesting facts about our author and even had the opportunity to ask Ms. Rocha some questions of their own during a Q and A session!

In Reading this week, we will be continuing to focus on our novel: Secrets of Bearhaven as well as working on Reading passages and comprehension questions to review some of the skills that we focused on from Unit 1. Some of our skills that we will be practicing and reviewing this week are: Setting, Sequence, Compare and Contrast, Author's Purpose and Character. We will also be practicing SLAM this week. *Students will have their Unit 1 Skills test on Friday, October 14th.*

Some of our skills that we will be focusing on and reviewing this week are: Context Clues, Main Idea and Finding Evidence to Support our Conclusions. We will also be practicing SLAM this week. Students will have their Unit 1 Skills test next week.

We will also be learning about locating different places on a map using these grid lines. Students will have a quiz on Thursday, October 6th, that will focus on Latitude and Longitude. Students should study their grid, notes, practice coordinate problems, and study guide in preparation for the quiz on Thursday.

In Spelling this week, we will begin with our Unit 6 spelling words. This is our first review unit. We will have our sixth spelling test this Friday, October 7th on Unit 6.

*Reminders*

  • On Tuesday, October 4th, we will have School Pictures. Students may dress in their Sunday best.
  • On Tuesday evening, October 4th, Mr. Stiak will be holding a meeting for new band members and parents from 6:30 - 8 PM.
  • Wednesday, October 5th, is Special Lunch Day.
  • On Thursday, October 6th, we are excited to welcome children's author K.E. Rocha to our school! She will be visiting our school to talk to students about her new book series: Secrets of Bearhaven.
