Ms. Courtney Garrity, Fourth Grade

Hello and welcome back! My name is Ms. Garrity and I am looking forward to beginning another school year here at St. John Fisher. This is my fifth year here at SJF, and I'm excited to be working with your child in fourth grade this year. Here are a few facts about me. I have worked at a school that specializes in Special Education. I received my teaching degree in Elementary Education from St. Xavier University. I love playing volleyball and watching Chicago sports teams, especially the Blackhawks. I have always had a passion for working with children from working at summer camps to teaching here at SJF. Even though I have just begun my career in the field of education, I continue to love teaching children and helping students to achieve their full potential. I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer! I'm looking forward to meeting you all on August 21, 2018! We are going to have a fantastic school year!

Week of December 19th - 23rd

Posted on Dec 19, 2016

Hello!

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!

We had our "Ag in the Classroom" presentation last week. The fourth graders really enjoyed the presentation and learned a lot!

In Reading last week, we focused on our story John Henry. Last week, we worked on and practiced several skills throughout our study of John Henry as well as worked on Reading activities and questions to review some of these skills that we practiced. Our skill that we focused on this past week was: Making Judgments.

In Reading this week, we will be continuing to focus on and review concepts that relate to our first story in Unit 3: John Henry. This week, we will be reviewing the skills we practiced throughout our study of John Henry as well as working on Reading activities, workbook pages and questions to review some of the skills that we practiced from our story. We will also be learning about and working with figurative language this week as well as locating examples of this throughout the story of John Henry. We will also be focusing on some examples of exaggeration, comparisons, and similes, and coming up with some of our own examples of this type of writing as well. We will be focusing on a word study this week as well as working and practicing with -er and -est words that can be found throughout the John Henry story. Students will be locating examples of -er and -est words in our story and discussing the different ways that these kinds of words are formed. We will also be reviewing our skill that we focused on from last week: making judgments. We will review and make judgments about why an author wrote a story as well as review the characteristics of a tall tale. We will also be practicing SLAM this week as well as working on an in-class SLAM question that relates to our story, and focuses on how the main character was portrayed as a legend in our story.

*A variety of different book reports will be assigned throughout the school year in Reading. Students were assigned their fourth book report. Students also received their December Book Report forms with the format as well. *For this fourth “December Book Report,” students may choose a Christmas book of their choice. *The December Book Report will be due this upcoming Wednesday, December 21st.* *Students are encouraged to turn in their book reports early, before the scheduled due date, if they are ready to be turned in.

*Also, students will be required to read and take quizzes on 8 books per trimester for Accelerated Reading. At least 1 of the 8 total books for the trimester needs to be a nonfiction book. There will also be due dates within the trimester for how many books should be read and AR quizzes taken.

*Students can now be working on reading books and taking AR quizzes for their 2nd trimester AR requirement.*
