Ms. Courtney Garrity, Fourth Grade

Hello and welcome back! My name is Ms. Garrity and I am looking forward to beginning another school year here at St. John Fisher. This is my fifth year here at SJF, and I'm excited to be working with your child in fourth grade this year. Here are a few facts about me. I have worked at a school that specializes in Special Education. I received my teaching degree in Elementary Education from St. Xavier University. I love playing volleyball and watching Chicago sports teams, especially the Blackhawks. I have always had a passion for working with children from working at summer camps to teaching here at SJF. Even though I have just begun my career in the field of education, I continue to love teaching children and helping students to achieve their full potential. I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer! I'm looking forward to meeting you all on August 21, 2018! We are going to have a fantastic school year!

Hello!

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend!

Thank you so much to everyone who was able to come to the Mass and Open House this past Sunday! I really enjoyed seeing all of you at the Open House! I hope everyone enjoyed visiting our classrooms to check out all the wonderful activities and projects that the students have been working very hard on over these past few weeks. The students have been doing a great job on their projects! :)

In Reading last week, we finished up working on our Paper Bag Book Reports. Students brought their book report book with them to class last week while we worked on our projects. We worked on the pictures for our paper bags well as finished up designing the final copy of our Paper Bag Book Reports.

In Reading this week, we will be continuing to focus on our Paper Bag Book Reports. Students will be presenting their Paper Bag Book Reports to the class this week! Students should continue to bring their book report book with them to class this week while we are presenting on our projects. Also, students will be focusing on some interesting facts about their classmates' Book Reports and writing about these during the presentations. We will also have mini question and answer sessions after the presentations. The Paper Bag Book Report was due last week. This week, we will also be working with Raz Kids for Reading Comprehension practice on the ipads as well.

This week, we will be focusing on a word study. We will be working and practicing with certain kinds of words and text that relate to this word study skill and can also be found throughout the story from last week. Our word study for this week focuses on inflected forms with -ed, -ing and -es endings. Students will be locating examples of these kinds of words that are found in our story and discussing the different ways that these kinds of words are formed. Students will also be working on a workbook page that focuses on this word study skill. We will also be working on practicing with SLAM this week.

*A variety of different book reports will be assigned throughout the school year in Reading. Students were assigned their fifth book report for the month of January. *For this fifth “January Book Report,” students chose a fiction book of their choice. Students should have had their book chosen and read by Tuesday (1/17). We will continue to focus on our book reports in class this week by presenting them to the class. The January Book Report was due by this past Wednesday, January 25th. *Students are encouraged to turn in their book reports early, before the scheduled due date, if they are ready to be turned in.*

*Also, students will be required to read and take quizzes on 8 books per trimester for Accelerated Reading. At least 1 of the 8 total books for the trimester needs to be a nonfiction book. There will also be due dates within the trimester for how many books should be read and AR quizzes taken.

*Students should now be working on reading books and taking AR quizzes for their 2nd trimester AR requirement.*

4th Grade – Accelerated Reader – Due Dates for the 2nd Trimester so far:

2 books and AR quizzes were due on Thursday, December 1st.

2 more books and AR quizzes (total of 4 books all together) were due by Thursday, December 22nd.

2 more books and AR quizzes (for a total of 6 books all together) were due by this past Friday, January 27th.

*2 more books and AR quizzes (for a total of 8 books all together including at least one nonfiction book) are due by Friday, February 17th.*

In Social Studies last week, we finished up our research, finding pictures, and working on the panels for our State Brochure. We also finished up working on designing the final copy of our State Brochure Project. Our State Brochure Projects were due by this past Friday. We also worked on finishing up our Timeline worksheet and our worksheet about important places that focused on Martin Luther King, Jr. last week as well. Our Martin Luther King, Jr. Project (the Timeline and Important Places worksheets) were due by this past Friday.

In Social Studies this week, we will continue focusing on our State Brochure Projects. Students will be presenting their State Brochure Projects to the class this week! Students should continue to bring any materials with them to class this week while we are presenting on our projects. Also, students will be focusing on some interesting facts about their classmates' State Brochure Projects and writing about these during the presentations. We will also have mini question and answer sessions after the presentations. The State Brochure Project was due on Thursday of last week.

In Spelling this week, we will begin with our Unit 20 spelling words. We will have our twentieth spelling test this Friday, February 3rd on Unit 20.

Week of January 23rd - 27th

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

In Reading last week, we began to work on our Paper Bag Book Reports. Students brought their book report book with them to class last week while we worked on our projects. We worked on proofreading our rough drafts as well as began to design the final copy of our Paper Bag Book Reports.

We will also be working with the comprehension questions that relate to our story, as well as focusing on how we can find evidence in our story. In Social Studies last week, we finished up our focus on Lesson 5 in our first unit of our textbook. We also reviewed and prepared for our test last week. Last week, we continued discussing and going over the vocabulary, review questions and study guide for Lesson 5. We also reviewed and prepared for our test last week by playing a review game. We had our test on Lesson 5. We also began researching and finding pictures for our State Brochure Projects last week. We worked on finishing up our MLK timelines as well as began to work on an activity about important places that focuses on Martin Luther King, Jr. as well.

Hello!

I hope everyone enjoyed their 3-day weekend!

In Reading last week, we focused on a review of the skills and concepts from our second story of Unit 3: Marven of the Great North Woods. We also focused on our skill from last week which was: Drawing Conclusions.

In Reading this week, we will be working on our Paper Bag Book Reports. Students should bring their book report book with them to class this week while we are working on our projects. Students worked on answering the review questions and we went over the study guide together. We also reviewed and prepared for our test this week.

Hello!

I hope everyone enjoyed their break, had a wonderful Christmas and had a Happy New Year!

I want to thank all of you for the wonderful Christmas gifts! That was so thoughtful! Thank you also for the generous class Christmas gift! I really appreciate all your kindness and generosity.

In Reading before break, we focused on a review of the skills and concepts from our first story of Unit 3 John Henry. We also focused on examples of figurative language, -er and -est words, as well as SLAM. Before break, we worked on and practiced several skills as well as worked on Reading activities, workbook pages and questions to review some of these skills that we practiced. We learned about and worked with figurative language before break as well as located examples of this throughout the story of John Henry. We also focused on some examples of exaggeration, comparisons, and similes, and worked on coming up with some of our own examples of this type of writing as well. We focused on a word study before break as well as worked and practiced with -er and -est words that can be found throughout the John Henry story. Students located examples of -er and -est words in our story and discussed the different ways that these kinds of words are formed. We also reviewed our skill that we focused on from the week before: making judgments. We reviewed and made judgments about why an author wrote a story as well as reviewed the characteristics of a tall tale. We also practiced SLAM this week as well as worked on an in-class SLAM question that relates to our story, and focuses on how the main character was portrayed as a legend in our story. We also worked with and focused on a Christmas poem, as well as some Christmas activities before break as well.

In Reading this week, we will begin to focus on our second story in Unit 3: Marven of the Great North Woods. Our skill that we will be focusing on this week is: Drawing Conclusions. *Students will have their Reading test that will focus on our story Marven of the Great North Woods on Friday, January 13th.* Students should study their vocabulary, notes and comprehension questions for the test on Friday. We will also be learning about drawing conclusions and working with examples.
