Ms. Courtney Garrity, Fourth Grade

Hello and welcome back! My name is Ms. Garrity and I am looking forward to beginning another school year here at St. John Fisher. This is my fifth year here at SJF, and I'm excited to be working with your child in fourth grade this year. Here are a few facts about me. I have worked at a school that specializes in Special Education. I received my teaching degree in Elementary Education from St. Xavier University. I love playing volleyball and watching Chicago sports teams, especially the Blackhawks. I have always had a passion for working with children from working at summer camps to teaching here at SJF. Even though I have just begun my career in the field of education, I continue to love teaching children and helping students to achieve their full potential. I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer! I'm looking forward to meeting you all on August 21, 2018! We are going to have a fantastic school year!

Week of October 30th - November 3rd

*I hope everyone had a great weekend!*

In Reading this week, we will be focusing on some Halloween themed reading and writing activities, reviewing some of our skills, working with some paired passages and beginning our novel study. This week, some of our skills that we will be focusing on will include: working with story elements, sequence, compare and contrast, as well as locating evidence to support our answers. We will also be practicing with some extended responses this week. Students will not have a Reading test this Friday, the 3rd. 

*A variety of different book reports will be assigned throughout the school year in Reading. Students are encouraged to turn in their book reports early, before the scheduled due date, if they are ready to be turned in.

*Also, students will be required to read and take quizzes on 8 books per trimester for Accelerated Reading. At least 1 of the 8 total books for the trimester needs to be a nonfiction book. There will also be due dates within the trimester for how many books should be read and AR quizzes taken.

4th Grade – Accelerated Reader – Due Dates for the 1st Trimester:

2 books and AR quizzes were due by Tuesday, September 12th.

2 more books were due (total of 4 books all together) and AR quizzes by Friday, September 29th.

2 more books were due (total of 6 books all together) and AR quizzes by this past Friday, October 20th.

*2 more books are due (for a total of 8 books all together) – All 8 books (including at least 1 NF book) and AR quizzes for the trimester are due by this upcoming Friday, November 3rd.*

In Social Studies last week, we began our study of the first lesson of Unit 1 in our textbook, which focuses on the First Americans. We read and discussed the sections as well as answered our questions for this lesson. We also began our study of Native Americans. We began our unit by beginning to focus on and learn all about the characteristics of several different Native American groups. In Social Studies this week, we will be continuing to focus on Lesson 1 of our textbook as well as Native Americans. We will be reviewing the information from this lesson and working on our study guides to prepare for our test this week. *Students will have a test this week on Friday, November 3rd that will focus on Lesson 1 of the first unit in our textbook.* Students should be able to answer questions about the vocabulary, as well as the different Native American groups that we have learning about in this lesson. Students should study their vocabulary, notes, tribe chart, as well as their study guide sheet in preparation for the test on Friday.

In Spelling this week, we will begin with our Unit 11 spelling words. We will have our eleventh spelling test this Friday, November 3rd on Unit 11.

Reminders:

  • On Tuesday, students may dress up in their costumes and can also bring in treats to pass out to their class for Halloween!
  • Friday Folders will go home this week. Please look over the contents of the folder and discuss your child's progress with him/her. You may keep the quizzes/tests that are in the folder. Also, the Friday Folder should be signed and returned on Monday of next week.

*I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather this past weekend!*

In Reading this week, we will be focusing on some paired texts as well as working on a Halloween themed writing activity. We will be learning about some environmental issues as well as the costs associated with sports while working with some paired passages and articles in our Time for Kids magazine. This week some of our skills that we will be focusing on will include: cause and effect, compare and contrast, context clues, as well as locating evidence to support our answers. We will also be practicing with writing some extended responses this week. Students will not have a Reading test this Friday, the 27th.

We also finished up working on, discussing and going over the answers to our Mapping Skill worksheets and activities. In Social Studies this week, we will begin to focus on the first lesson of Unit 1 in our textbook, which focuses on the First Americans. In Social Studies this week, we will finish up working on, discussing and going over the answers to our Map Skills worksheets and Mapping Skill activities that we began working on last week. This week, we will also begin to focus on the first lesson of Unit 1 in our textbook. We will be reading and discussing the sections of this lesson, working on the vocabulary, as well as answering the questions for this lesson. We will also be discussing, working with, and reading all about timelines. We will be practicing locating events on a timeline and using concepts related to reading a timeline.

In Spelling this week, we will begin with our Unit 9 spelling words. We will have our ninth spelling test this Friday, October 20th on Unit 9.

Some of our skills that we will be focusing on and reviewing this week are: Sequence, Author's Purpose, Compare/Contrast and Character. We will also be focusing on some other skills such as theme and context clues as well. *Students will have their Unit 1 Reading Skills Test on Friday, October 13th.* Students should practice these skills for the test on Friday.

We will be continuing to review hemispheres, cardinal directions, and lines of latitude and longitude this week. We will also be practicing with locating places using the different hemispheres, cardinal directions, and also locating different places on a map using these grid lines. We will be focusing on reviewing some key terms as well as working on how to locate different places and bodies of water on a map using the lines of latitude and longitude. *Students will have a test this week on Wednesday, October 11th that will focus on all of the map skills that we have learned.* Students should be able to answer questions about some key vocabulary terms related to hemispheres, cardinal directions, latitude and longitude. Students should also be able to locate different places on a map correctly using these grid lines, as well as answer some other questions about hemispheres, cardinal directions, latitude and longitude for their test. Students should study their notes, HW worksheets, as well as their review sheets in preparation for the test on Wednesday. 

In Spelling this week, we will begin with our Unit 8 spelling words. We will have our eighth spelling test this Friday, October 13th on Unit 8.
