Ms. Courtney Garrity, Fourth Grade

Hello and welcome back! My name is Ms. Garrity and I am looking forward to beginning another school year here at St. John Fisher. This is my fifth year here at SJF, and I'm excited to be working with your child in fourth grade this year. Here are a few facts about me. I have worked at a school that specializes in Special Education. I received my teaching degree in Elementary Education from St. Xavier University. I love playing volleyball and watching Chicago sports teams, especially the Blackhawks. I have always had a passion for working with children from working at summer camps to teaching here at SJF. Even though I have just begun my career in the field of education, I continue to love teaching children and helping students to achieve their full potential. I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer! I'm looking forward to meeting you all on August 21, 2018! We are going to have a fantastic school year!

Hello!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!! 

In Reading last week, we continued our focus on our novel The Lemonade War. We focused on Chapters 8-14 of our novel last week. Students had a test on Chapters 8-14 of our novel last week as well.

In Reading this week, we will continue to focus on our novel The Lemonade War. Now that we have finished reading our novel, we will be focusing on some different activities that relate to our novel this week. We will also be working with some practice worksheets to go with our novel this week as well.

*A variety of different book reports will be assigned throughout the school year in Reading. For the May Book Report, students will be designing their own book marks. *Students should have their book chosen and brought in by Friday, May 19th.* We worked on our book marks in class on Friday, the 19th and will be finishing them up on Monday, May 22nd. *Students are encouraged to turn in their book reports early, before the scheduled due date, if they are ready to be turned in.*

*Also, students will be required to read and take quizzes on 8 books per trimester for Accelerated Reading. At least 1 of the 8 total books for the trimester needs to be a nonfiction book. There will also be due dates within the trimester for how many books should be read and AR quizzes taken.

*Students should now be finished reading books and taking AR quizzes for their 3rd trimester AR requirement.*

4th Grade – Accelerated Reader – The Due Dates for the 3rd Trimester are:

2 books and AR quizzes were due by this past Friday, March 17th.

2 more books and AR quizzes (total of 4 books all together) were due by Monday, April 3rd.

2 more books and AR quizzes (for a total of 6 books all together) were due by Friday, April 28th.

*2 more books and AR quizzes (for a total of 8 books all together including at least one nonfiction book) were due by this past Friday, May 26th.*

In Social Studies last week, we continued to focus on a review of the states and capitals of the Southwest Region. We practiced and reviewed for our test on the SW Region that was last week. We also played a review game to prepare for our test. We also continued focusing on the states and capitals of the West (Northwest) Region last week. We also practiced with our state and capital flashcards for these regions as well.

In Social Studies this week, we will continue focusing on a review of the states and capitals of the Northwest (West) Region. We will practice and review for our test on the states and capitals of the W/NW Region that will be on Tuesday of this week. We will also work with our map study guide sheets as well as practice with our state and capital flashcards for the W (NW) Region. We will also play a review game to prepare for our test on Tuesday. *We will have our test on the states and capitals of the Northwest (West) Region this week on Tuesday, May 30th.* Students should study their maps, study guide review sheets, as well as their NW state and capital flashcards in preparation for the test this week. We will continue to practice with our NW Region state and capital study guides and flashcards this week. We will also work on a map review sheet for the NW Region as well.

In Spelling this week, we will begin with our Unit 35 spelling words. We will have our thirty-fifth spelling test this Friday, June 2nd on Unit 35.

*Reminders*

  • Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who came in to help us build our rockets last Thursday! We really appreciate all your help! We will be launching our rockets this week on Thursday, June 1st. Our rocket launch will be held at Beverly Park, and we will begin launching around 9:15am. All students should bring a lunch with them to school on Thursday. Students can also bring water bottles. All are welcome to come to attend the Rocket Launch. We are looking forward to this exciting day!
  • Friday Folders will go home this week. Please look over the contents of the folder and discuss your child's progress with him/her. You may keep the quizzes/tests that are in the folder. Also, the Friday Folder should be signed and returned on Monday of next week.

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!!

In Reading last week, we continued our focus on our novel The Lemonade War. We focused on Chapters 7-11 last week. We read, discussed and took notes on Chapters 7-11 of our novel The Lemonade War. Students had a test on Chapters 1-7 of our novel last week as well. Students also worked with Reading comprehension practice last week.

In Reading this week, we will continue our focus on our novel The Lemonade War. We will be focusing on Chapters 10-14 this week. We will begin reading, discussing and taking notes on Chapters 11-14 of our novel. We will also be working on our practice worksheet packets for Chapters 11-14 this week. *Students will have a test on Chapters 8-14 of our novel this week on Friday, May 26th.* Students should study their notes, practice worksheets (the chapter packets) and vocabulary study guide (with each of the chapter vocabulary words) in preparation for the test on Friday.

In Reading last week, we continued our focus on our novel The Lemonade War. We also began reading, discussing and taking notes on Chapters 4-7 of our novel The Lemonade War last week. Students also worked with Reading comprehension practice last week.

In Reading last week, we began to focus on a practice passage and questions that focused on a topic for Earth Day. We read, discussed and answered questions about this article. We also found evidence to support our answers. Last week, we also focused on some poetry. One of our poems that we focused on related to a topic about Spring. We read, discussed and answered questions about this poem. We also discussed concepts and material related to poetry. Students also brought in some poems or a book of poems to focus on for a poetry activity. We worked on our poetry activities. We also shared some poems aloud as well as some information about our poems. Students also worked with Raz Kids on the ipads last week for Reading comprehension practice.
