Ms. Courtney Garrity, Fourth Grade

Hello and welcome back! My name is Ms. Garrity and I am looking forward to beginning another school year here at St. John Fisher. This is my fifth year here at SJF, and I'm excited to be working with your child in fourth grade this year. Here are a few facts about me. I have worked at a school that specializes in Special Education. I received my teaching degree in Elementary Education from St. Xavier University. I love playing volleyball and watching Chicago sports teams, especially the Blackhawks. I have always had a passion for working with children from working at summer camps to teaching here at SJF. Even though I have just begun my career in the field of education, I continue to love teaching children and helping students to achieve their full potential. I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer! I'm looking forward to meeting you all on August 21, 2018! We are going to have a fantastic school year!

Week of October 29th - November 2nd

Hello!

*I hope everyone had a great weekend!*

*In Reading this week, we will be focusing on some Halloween themed reading and writing activities, reviewing some of our skills, working with some paired passages and beginning our novel study. This week, some of our skills that we will be focusing on will include: working on a SLAM, working with story elements, sequence, compare and contrast, as well as locating evidence to support our answers. We will also be focusing on and practicing with some different kinds of study skills and extended responses this week. *Students will not have a Reading test this Friday, the 2nd.* 

*A variety of different book reports will be assigned throughout the school year in Reading. Students were assigned their second book report. For this second “October Book Report,” students chose a *mystery* book of their choice. *The October Book Report was due on Friday, October 19th.* Students are encouraged to turn in their book reports early, before the scheduled due date, if they are ready to be turned in.

*Also, students will be required to read and take quizzes on 8 books per trimester for Accelerated Reading. At least 1 of the 8 total books for the trimester needs to be a nonfiction book. There will also be due dates within the trimester for how many books should be read and AR quizzes taken.

4th Grade – Accelerated Reader – Due Dates for the 1st Trimester:

*2 books and AR quizzes were due by Tuesday, September 18th.*

*2 more books were due (for a total of 4 books all together) and AR quizzes by Monday, October 1st.*

*2 more books were due (for a total of 6 books all together) and AR quizzes by this past Monday, October 22nd.*

*2 more books will be due (for a total of 8 books all together including at least 1 nonfiction book) and AR quizzes by next Monday, November 5th.*

*In Social Studies this week, we will be practicing with our Map Skills. We will be practicing with cardinal directions as well as using these skills to work on a Fall/Halloween themed map plan activity. Students will be constructing their own map plan instructions for this activity. We will also be focusing on Lesson 1 of the first unit of our textbook, which focuses on the First Americans, and this will also begin our study of Native Americans. We will begin to focus on and learn all about the characteristics of several different Native American groups. We will be reading and discussing the first lesson in Unit 1 of our hardcover this week. We will read and discuss the sections as well as answer our key questions for this lesson. We will also be working with timelines this week as well. Later in the week, we will be reviewing the information from this lesson and working on our study guides to prepare for our test next week. *Students will have a test next week on Tuesday, November 6th that will focus on Lesson 1 of the first unit in our textbook.* Students should be able to answer questions about the vocabulary, as well as the different Native American groups that we have learning about in this lesson. Students should study their vocabulary, notes, as well as their study guide sheet in preparation for the test on Tuesday of next week.

*In Spelling this week, we will begin with our Unit 10 spelling words. We will have our tenth spelling test this upcoming Friday, November 2nd on Unit 10.

*Reminders:

  • On Wednesday, October 31st, students may dress up in their costumes and can also bring in treats or candy to pass out to their classmates for Halloween! We have 20 students in our homeroom class.
  • On Thursday, November 1st, we will have the All Saints Day Mass at 1:00.
  • Friday folders will go home this week. Please look over the contents of the folder and discuss your child's progress with him/her. You may keep the tests/quizzes that are in the folder. Also, the Friday folder should be signed and returned on Monday of next week.

We will also be focusing on and practicing with some different kinds of study skills. *Students will have their Reading test this Friday, October 26th.* Students should study their vocabulary words, notes and comprehension review questions about our story for the test on Friday of this week.

We will be reviewing and practicing with cardinal directions, hemispheres, and latitude and longitude, as well as how to use these skills to locate and identify certain places on a map. Students will be practicing using all of these map skills to locate and identify certain places correctly on a map for some different activities. We will also begin reading and discussing the first lesson in Unit 1 of our hardcover this week. We will also be discussing and working with timelines this week as well.

In Spelling this week, we will begin with our Unit 9 spelling words. We will have our ninth spelling test this upcoming Friday, October 26th on Unit 9.

*Reminders:

  • Students may bring in their dollar donation for the Chicago Diabetes Project on Friday, October 26th, and may be out of uniform on that day as well.

We will be reviewing and practicing with cardinal directions, hemispheres, and latitude and longitude, as well as how to use these skills to locate and identify certain places on a map. *Students will have a Map Skills Test this week on Tuesday, October 16th, that will focus on all of the map skills that we have been practicing and learning about: (cardinal directions, hemispheres, latitude and longitude).* Students should know their vocabulary words as well as be be able to use all of these map skills to locate and identify certain places correctly on a map using these skills for their test.  Students should study their vocabulary notes, maps and review questions in preparation for the test on Tuesday of this week.

In Spelling this week, we will begin with our Unit 8 spelling words. We will have our eighth spelling test this upcoming Friday, October 19th on Unit 8.

Hello!

*I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend and enjoyed the beautiful weather!*

In Reading this week, we will begin to focus on our fifth story in Unit 1 of our hardcover Reading book: Train to Somewhere. Our skill that we will be focusing on this week is: Sequence. This week, we will also be reviewing our skills that we have been practicing throughout Unit 1 which are: setting, sequence, compare and contrast, author's purpose and character. We will also be focusing on some different kinds of letter and word patterns. *Students will have their Unit 1 Reading Skills test this Friday, October 12th.* Students should study their skill notes and practice using these skills to answer comprehension questions about different stories for the test on Friday of this week.

*A variety of different book reports will be assigned throughout the school year in Reading. Students were assigned their second book report last week.
