Ms. Courtney Garrity, Fourth Grade

Hello and welcome back! My name is Ms. Garrity and I am looking forward to beginning another school year here at St. John Fisher. This is my fifth year here at SJF, and I'm excited to be working with your child in fourth grade this year. Here are a few facts about me. I have worked at a school that specializes in Special Education. I received my teaching degree in Elementary Education from St. Xavier University. I love playing volleyball and watching Chicago sports teams, especially the Blackhawks. I have always had a passion for working with children from working at summer camps to teaching here at SJF. Even though I have just begun my career in the field of education, I continue to love teaching children and helping students to achieve their full potential. I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer! I'm looking forward to meeting you all on August 21, 2018! We are going to have a fantastic school year!

Week of November 26th - 30th

Hello!

*I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and a relaxing break!*

*In Reading this week, we will be focusing on some reading and writing activities as well as continuing with our Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing novel study. This week, we will be focusing on *Chapters 7-10* of our novel. This week, some of our skills that we will be focusing on will include working with and reviewing: our vocabulary, story elements, plot, sequence, comprehension and analysis of the chapters, figurative language, compare and contrast, as well as practicing locating evidence to support our answers. We will also be practicing with some paired passages and extended responses this week. *Students will have a Reading test next week that will focus on Chapters 7-10 of our novel on Thursday, December 6th.* Students should study their vocabulary, notes, as well as information from their student packets and worksheets.

*A variety of different book reports will be assigned throughout the school year in Reading. For this past “November Book Report,” students chose a *fiction* book of their choice. *The November Book Report was due on Tuesday, November 20th.* Students will be assigned their fourth book report this week, and will receive the form with the format for their book report next week. For this fourth “December Book Report,” students may choose a *Christmas* book of their choice. December Book Report due date to be determined. Students are encouraged to turn in their book reports early, before the scheduled due date, if they are ready to be turned in.

*Also, students will be required to read and take quizzes on *8 books per trimester for Accelerated Reading.* There will also be due dates within the trimester for how many books should be read and AR quizzes taken. At least *1* of the 8 total books for the trimester needs to be a *nonfiction book.* *Also, please note that students need to earn a score of 70 percent or higher on their AR quizzes in order for them to receive credit for the ARs.*

*Students may now be working on taking ARs that will count for the second trimester.*

*4th Grade – Accelerated Reader – Due Dates for the 2nd Trimester*:

**2 books and AR quizzes will be due by Monday, December 3rd.**

*In Social Studies this week, we will finish up our study of Lesson 2, as well as begin to focus on Lesson 3 of the first unit of our textbook. We will be reading, discussing and learning all about the information in the third lesson in Unit 1 of our hardcover this week. We will read and discuss the sections as well as answer our review questions for this lesson. Also, we will be reviewing the information from this lesson as well as working on and going over our study guides to prepare for our test next week. *Students will have a test next week on Wednesday, December 5th that will focus on Lesson 3 of the first unit in our textbook.* Students should be able to answer questions about the vocabulary, as well as the information that we have learning about in this lesson. Students should study their vocabulary, notes, as well as their study guide sheet in preparation for the test on Wednesday of next week. 

*In Spelling this week, we will begin with our *Unit 13* spelling words. We will have our thirteenth spelling test this upcoming Friday, November 30th on Unit 13.

*Reminders*:

  • Friday folders will go home this week. Please look over the contents of the folder and discuss your child's progress with him/her. You may keep the tests/quizzes that are in the folder. Also, the Friday folder should be signed and returned on Monday of next week.

We will be reading and discussing the second lesson in Unit 1 of our hardcover this week. We will read and discuss the sections as well as answer our review questions for this lesson. Also, we will be reviewing the information from this lesson as well as working on and going over our study guides to prepare for our test next week. *Students will have a test next week on Tuesday, November 20th that will focus on Lesson 2 of the first unit in our textbook.* Students should be able to answer questions about the vocabulary, as well as the information that we have learning about in this lesson. Students should study their vocabulary, notes, as well as their study guide sheet in preparation for the test on Tuesday of next week. 

*In Spelling this week, we will begin with our *Unit 12* spelling words. *This is a review unit.* We will have our twelfth spelling test this upcoming Friday, November 16th on Unit 12.

*Reminders*:

  • The first trimester ended this past Friday, the 9th. The second trimester begins on Monday of this week. Report cards will be distributed and sent home this week on Wednesday, November 14th.

*Also, thank you so much to everyone for sending in all the candy and treats last week for Halloween! We had a lot of fun celebrating with our classmates!*

This week, we will be focusing on *Chapters 1-6* of our novel. *In Spelling this week, we will begin with our *Unit 11* spelling words. We will have our eleventh spelling test this upcoming Friday, November 9th on Unit 11.

*Reminders*:

  • On Wednesday, November 7th, we will have Special Lunch.
  • On Friday, November 9th, we will have an all-school Prayer Service at 1:15 for Veterans Day. All are welcome to join us to honor our veterans. Also, on Friday, we will be collecting money for "Honor Flight Chicago." If students bring in a donation, they may be out of uniform in red, white and blue attire. Thank you in advance for your support.
