Ms. Courtney Garrity, Fourth Grade

Hello and welcome back! My name is Ms. Garrity and I am looking forward to beginning another school year here at St. John Fisher. This is my fifth year here at SJF, and I'm excited to be working with your child in fourth grade this year. Here are a few facts about me. I have worked at a school that specializes in Special Education. I received my teaching degree in Elementary Education from St. Xavier University. I love playing volleyball and watching Chicago sports teams, especially the Blackhawks. I have always had a passion for working with children from working at summer camps to teaching here at SJF. Even though I have just begun my career in the field of education, I continue to love teaching children and helping students to achieve their full potential. I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer! I'm looking forward to meeting you all on August 21, 2018! We are going to have a fantastic school year!

Week of February 19th - 23rd

Hello!

*I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend!*

*In Reading this week, students will be focusing on and working with a story from our hardcover textbook called A Cricket in Times Square. Our skill for this week is visualizing. We will be reading and discussing our story, as well as working with some discussion questions, activities and extended responses that focus on a review of our story for this week. We will also be practicing finding and locating text evidence to support our answers to our questions for this week as well. *We will have a test on Tuesday of next week, February 27th that will focus on our story.* *Students should study their vocabulary words as well as their discussion questions for our story in preparation for the test on Tuesday of next week.* *In Reading this week, we will also be reading and discussing some articles in our Time for Kids magazines. 

*A variety of different book reports will be assigned throughout the school year in Reading. Students were assigned their sixth book report. *For this sixth “February Book Report,” students should have picked a Biography book of their choice.* *Students should be continuing to work on reading their Biography book and completing their Book Report form.* Students received the form with the format for their book report last week. *The Biography Book Report will be due by this upcoming Thursday, February 22nd.* Students are encouraged to turn in their book reports early, before the scheduled due date, if they are ready to be turned in.

*Also, students will be required to read and take quizzes on 8 books per trimester for Accelerated Reading. At least 1 of the 8 total books for the trimester needs to be a nonfiction book. There will also be due dates within the trimester for how many books should be read and AR quizzes taken.

4th Grade – Accelerated Reader – Due Dates for the 2nd Trimester:

2 books and AR quizzes were due by Friday, December 8th.

2 more books (for a total of 4 books all together) and AR quizzes were due by Thursday, January 11th.

2 more books (for a total of 6 books all together) and AR quizzes were due by Friday, February 2nd.

*2 more books were due (for a total of 8 books all together) – All 8 books (including at least 1 NF book) and AR quizzes for the trimester were due by this past Friday, February 16th.*

*This week, on Thursday, February 22nd, students may begin taking ARs that will count for the 3rd trimester.*

*In Social Studies this week, we will be continuing to focus on and review Lesson 4 of Unit 1 of our textbook. Students will be discussing and answering questions about this lesson.  We will be working with our Study Guide review questions as well as discussing and going over our Study Guides for this lesson. We will also play a review game to prepare for our test. *We will have our Lesson 4 test this week, on Wednesday, February 21st.* *Students should study their vocabulary, section review questions and study guides in preparation for the test on Wednesday of this week.* This week, we will also begin our focus on our next lesson in Unit 1 of our textbook, Lesson 5. We will begin working with the vocabulary in this lesson. We will also begin reading, discussing and answering questions about this lesson.

*In Spelling this week, we will begin with our Unit 24 spelling words. *This is a review unit.* We will have our twenty-fourth spelling test this Friday, February 23rd on Unit 24.

*Reminders*:

  • Friday Folders will go home this week. Please look over the contents of the folder and discuss your child's progress with him/her. You may keep the quizzes/tests that are in the folder. Also, the Friday Folder should be signed and returned on Monday of next week.

Hello!

*I hope everyone had a great weekend and enjoyed their snow day!*

*In Reading this week, students will be focusing on and working with a ReadWorks article all about the life and leadership of Abraham Lincoln. We will be reading and discussing our article, as well as working with some discussion questions, activities and extended responses that focus on a review of our article for this week. We will also be practicing finding and locating text evidence to support our answers to our questions for this week as well. *We will have a test on Thursday, February 15th that will focus on our Abraham Lincoln article for this week called U.S. Presidents: Abraham Lincoln.* Students should study their vocabulary words as well as their discussion questions for our article in preparation for the test on Thursday. *In Reading this week, we will also be reading and discussing some articles in our Time for Kids magazines.

*Reminders*

  • On Tuesday, February 13th, we will celebrate Valentines Day! Students may wear a touch of red with their uniform on Tuesday. Also, students may bring in treats, candy and/or Valentines. We have 23 students in our homeroom. Thank you!! :)
  • We will have a fundraiser on Friday to support the Behind the Vest Campaign. Students will be out of uniform and will also participate in playing a game of BINGO for "Play for the Police" Day on Friday of this week. Students can bring in a suggested donation of $2 or more to raise money to purchase protective vests for Chicago Police Officers. Thank you for your generosity!!
  • Also, the 19th Ward is hosting the "Behind the Vest" Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, February 18th at 8 a.m.
  • There will be no school on Monday, February 19th for President's Day.

Hello!

*I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!*

*The students have been doing a great job presenting on their Paper Bag Book Report and State Brochure projects! The students have also been enjoying writing down their interesting facts and asking some creative questions during our mini question and answer sessions after our presentations!* :)

*In Reading this week, students will be finishing up presenting their Paper Bag Book Reports to the class. Students should continue to bring their book report book with them to class this week while we are presenting on our projects. Students will be finishing up focusing on some interesting facts about their classmates' Book Reports and writing about these during the presentations as well. We will also have mini question and answer sessions after the presentations. *In Reading this week, we will also be reading some articles about some influential people in our Time for Kids magazines as well as working with some paired passages. For our paired passages, we will be focusing on some ReadWorks articles about health and safety during the season of winter.

*In Social Studies last week, we continued focusing on our State Brochure Projects. Students presented their State Brochure Projects to the class last week. Last week, students also focused on some interesting facts about their classmates' State Brochure Projects and wrote about these during the presentations.
