Ms. Courtney Garrity, Fourth Grade

Hello and welcome back! My name is Ms. Garrity and I am looking forward to beginning another school year here at St. John Fisher. This is my fifth year here at SJF, and I'm excited to be working with your child in fourth grade this year. Here are a few facts about me. I have worked at a school that specializes in Special Education. I received my teaching degree in Elementary Education from St. Xavier University. I love playing volleyball and watching Chicago sports teams, especially the Blackhawks. I have always had a passion for working with children from working at summer camps to teaching here at SJF. Even though I have just begun my career in the field of education, I continue to love teaching children and helping students to achieve their full potential. I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer! I'm looking forward to meeting you all on August 21, 2018! We are going to have a fantastic school year!

Week of April 30th - May 4th

Hello!

*I hope everyone had a great weekend!*

*In Reading this week, students will be focusing on and working with a novel called: Who Is Neil Armstrong? on the iPads. Some of our skills that we will be working on and practicing for this week include sequence, compare and contrast, as well as finding, locating and using key details. We will be reading and discussing Chapters 1-5 of our novel, as well as working with some discussion and comprehension questions, activities and extended responses that focus on a review of our chapters and skills for this week. We will also be practicing finding and locating text evidence to support our answers to our questions for this week as well. *We will have a test on Friday of this week, May 4th that will focus on Chapters 1-5 of our novel.* *Students should study their study guide review questions as well as their discussion questions for our novel in preparation for the test on Friday of this week.* *In Reading this week, we will also be working with a poem. We will read, discuss and answer some comprehension questions about our poem. We will also be finishing up presenting our Poetry Book Reports to the class as well as working with and practicing in our workbook this week. 

*A variety of different book reports will be assigned throughout the school year in Reading.  Students are encouraged to turn in their book reports early, before the scheduled due date, if they are ready to be turned in.

*Also, students will be required to read and take quizzes on 8 books per trimester for Accelerated Reading. At least 1 of the 8 total books for the trimester needs to be a nonfiction book. There will also be due dates within the trimester for how many books should be read and AR quizzes taken.

4th Grade – Accelerated Reader – Due Dates for the 3rd Trimester:

2 books and AR quizzes were due by Friday, March 23rd.

2 more books (for a total of 4 books all together) and AR quizzes were due by Friday, April 13th.

*2 more books (for a total of 6 books all together) and AR quizzes are due by this upcoming Friday, May 4th.*

2 more books are due (for a total of 8 books all together) – All 8 books (including at least 1 NF book) and AR quizzes for the trimester are due by Friday, May 25th.

*Students may continue taking ARs that will count for the 3rd trimester.*

*In Social Studies this week, we will be continuing to focus on the Northeast Region. We will be studying the states and capitals of this region. We will be working with our study guides as well as practicing with our flashcards and going over our maps for this region. We will also be preparing for our test this week. *We will have our Northeast Region States and Capitals test this week, on Thursday, May 3rd.* *Students should study their flashcards, maps study guides, and review sheet in preparation for the test on Thursday of this week.*

*In Spelling this week, we will begin with our Unit 32 spelling words. We will have our thirty-second spelling test this Friday, May 4th on Unit 32.

*Reminders*:

  • We will have Special Lunch on Wednesday, May 2nd.
  • Also, students can bring in $1 or more on Thursday, May 3rd, and can be out of uniform to show their support for the project "Kids Helping Kids" for Special Olympics. Also, students are encouraged to wear red on Thursday.
  • This Friday, May 4th is May Crowning. It will be a half day of school for students. Students will be dismissed at 11:45 AM.
  • Friday Folders will go home this week. Please look over the contents of the folder and discuss your child's progress with him/her. You may keep the quizzes/tests that are in the folder. Also, the Friday Folder should be signed and returned on Monday of next week.

*In Reading this week, students will be focusing on and working with some articles in our Time for Kids magazines. Some of our skills that we will be working on and practicing for this week include cause and effect, compare and contrast, as well as main idea and details. We will be reading and discussing our articles, as well as working with some discussion questions, activities and extended responses that focus on a review of our articles and skills for this week. We will also be practicing finding and locating text evidence to support our answers to our questions for this week as well. *In Reading this week, we will also be working with and practicing in our workbook. 

*A variety of different book reports will be assigned throughout the school year in Reading. Students were assigned their eighth book report. *For this “April Book Report,” students should have picked a Poetry book of their choice.* *Students should be continuing to work on reading the poems in their Poetry book and completing their Book Report form.* Students should have also received the form with the format for their book report last week. *The Poetry Book Report will be due by next Wednesday, April 25th.* Students are encouraged to turn in their book reports early, before the scheduled due date, if they are ready to be turned in.
