Ms. Courtney Garrity, Fourth Grade

Hello and welcome back! My name is Ms. Garrity and I am looking forward to beginning another school year here at St. John Fisher. This is my fifth year here at SJF, and I'm excited to be working with your child in fourth grade this year. Here are a few facts about me. I have worked at a school that specializes in Special Education. I received my teaching degree in Elementary Education from St. Xavier University. I love playing volleyball and watching Chicago sports teams, especially the Blackhawks. I have always had a passion for working with children from working at summer camps to teaching here at SJF. Even though I have just begun my career in the field of education, I continue to love teaching children and helping students to achieve their full potential. I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer! I'm looking forward to meeting you all on August 21, 2018! We are going to have a fantastic school year!

Week of May 21st - 25th

*I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!*

*In Reading this week, students will be finishing up focusing on and working with a novel called: Who Is Neil Armstrong? on the iPads. Also in Reading this week, we will begin focusing on our next novel called: The Lemonade War. Some of our skills that we will be working on and practicing for this week include working with our vocabulary words, figurative language, compare and contrast, as well as finding, locating and using key details. We will be reading and discussing Chapters 1-7 of our novel, as well as working with some discussion and comprehension questions, activities and extended responses that focus on a review of our chapters and skills for this week. We will also be practicing finding and locating text evidence to support our answers to our questions for this week as well. *We will have a test on Friday of this week, May 25th that will focus on Chapters 1-7 of our novel.* *Students should study their study guide review questions as well as their discussion questions for our novel in preparation for the test on Friday of this week.* *In Reading this week, we will also be working on making and designing the final copies of our bookmarks. *The Bookmark Book Reports will be due by the end of class on Tuesday, May 22nd.* We will also be working with and practicing in our workbook this week. 

*A variety of different book reports will be assigned throughout the school year in Reading.  Students are encouraged to turn in their book reports early, before the scheduled due date, if they are ready to be turned in.

*Also, students will be required to read and take quizzes on 8 books per trimester for Accelerated Reading. At least 1 of the 8 total books for the trimester needs to be a nonfiction book. There will also be due dates within the trimester for how many books should be read and AR quizzes taken.

4th Grade – Accelerated Reader – Due Dates for the 3rd Trimester:

2 books and AR quizzes were due by Friday, March 23rd.

2 more books (for a total of 4 books all together) and AR quizzes were due by Friday, April 13th.

2 more books (for a total of 6 books all together) and AR quizzes were due by Friday, May 4th.

*2 more books are due (for a total of 8 books all together including at least 1 Nonfiction Book) – All 8 books (including at least 1 NF book) and AR quizzes for the trimester are due by this upcoming Friday, May 25th.*

*Students may continue taking ARs that will count for the 3rd trimester.*

*In Social Studies this week, we will be continuing to focus on the West Region. We will be studying the states and capitals of this region. We will be working with our study guides as well as practicing with our flashcards and going over our maps for this region. We will also be preparing for our test next week. *We will have our West Region States and Capitals test next week, on Tuesday, May 29th.* *Students should study their flashcards, maps study guides, and review sheet in preparation for the test on Tuesday of next week.* *In Social Studies this week, we will also be continuing to work on our Region Projects. We will be researching information about our regions and working on our rough drafts and final copies. *The Region Project will be due on Friday, May 25th.*

*In Spelling this week, we will begin with our Unit 35 spelling words. We will have our thirty-fifth spelling test this Friday, May 25th on Unit 35.


  • We will have Spirit Week this week. Students can be out of uniform all this week with a theme for each day.
  • Also, we will have our rocket building day this Thursday. Students will need to make sure they bring in liquid glue. If you are helping to build rockets with us on Thursday, please come to school by 8:30. Thank you so much!
  • Students will not have school on Monday for Memorial Day.
  • Friday Folders will go home this week. Please look over the contents of the folder and discuss your child's progress with him/her. You may keep the quizzes/tests that are in the folder. Also, the Friday Folder should be signed and returned on Tuesday of next week.
