Ms. Courtney Garrity, Fourth Grade

Hello and welcome back! My name is Ms. Garrity and I am looking forward to beginning another school year here at St. John Fisher. This is my fifth year here at SJF, and I'm excited to be working with your child in fourth grade this year. Here are a few facts about me. I have worked at a school that specializes in Special Education. I received my teaching degree in Elementary Education from St. Xavier University. I love playing volleyball and watching Chicago sports teams, especially the Blackhawks. I have always had a passion for working with children from working at summer camps to teaching here at SJF. Even though I have just begun my career in the field of education, I continue to love teaching children and helping students to achieve their full potential. I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer! I'm looking forward to meeting you all on August 21, 2018! We are going to have a fantastic school year!

READING: In Reading this week, we will continue to focus on our novel study: Tales of a Fourth Grade NothingThis week, we will be focusing on the second half of our novel (Chapters 7-10). We will be reviewing Chapters 7-8, as well as reading, discussing and reviewing Chapters 9-10, to get ready for our test this week. *Students will have a Reading Test this week, on Thursday, December 19th, that will focus on the second half (Chapters 7-10) of our novel.* Students should study their vocabulary words and definitions for Chapters 7-10 (found on their master vocabulary list for our novel), their worksheets and information in their Student Packets, as well as any additional worksheets about our novel in preparation for the test on Thursday of this week. *Also, students will have their Reading Tests on Fridays, unless otherwise stated. 

*A variety of different BOOK REPORTS will be assigned throughout the school year in Reading. For their "December Book Report," students should have chosen a *Christmas-themed* book of their choice. *The December (Christmas) Book Report was due by this past Friday, December 13th.* Students are encouraged to turn in their book reports early, before the scheduled due date, if they are ready to be turned in.

*Also, students will be required to read and take quizzes on 8 books per trimester for ACCELERATED READING. At least 1 of the 8 total books for the trimester needs to be a nonfiction book. There will also be due dates within the trimester for how many books should be read and AR quizzes taken.

4th Grade – Accelerated Reader – Due Dates for the 2nd Trimester:

*2 books and AR quizzes (for a total of 2 ARs all together) were due by  Wednesday, December 4th.*

**2 more books and AR quizzes (for a total of 4 ARs all together) are due by Wednesday, January 15th.**

SOCIAL STUDIES: In Social Studies last week, we continued our focus on and study of the third lesson in the first unit of our textbook. This week, we will finish up our focus on and study of Lesson 3. We will be discussing, going over and reviewing the information in Lesson 3 as well as the vocabulary for this lesson as well. We will also be working on and going over our Study Guide Review Sheets to get ready for our test this week. *We will have a Social Studies Test this week, on Wednesday, December 18th, that will focus on Lesson 3 of Unit 1 in our hardcover.* Students should study their vocabulary words and definitions, study guide review sheets and their answers to the A-D questions in their notebook in preparation for the test on Wednesday of this week.

SPELLING: In Spelling this week, we will begin with our Unit 16 spelling words. We will have our sixteenth spelling test this Friday, December 20th on Unit 16.

*Reminders & Important Due Dates*

  • On Wednesday of this week, December 18th, we will have a Social Studies Test that will focus on Lesson 3 of Unit 1 in our hardcover.
  • On Thursday of this week, December 19th, we will have a Reading Test that will focus on the second half of our novel (Chapters 7-10).
  • On Friday of this week, December 20th, we will have a half day of school. Students can wear their Sunday best. Dismissal is at 11:30 AM.
  • Friday Folders will go home this week. Please look over the contents of the folder and discuss your child's progress with him/her. You may keep the tests/quizzes that are in the folder. Also, the Friday Folder should be signed and returned on the Monday after Christmas Break. Thank you!

  • On Tuesday of this week, December 10th, we will have our field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry! Students should wear their gym uniforms, bring a brown bag lunch (no glass, please), and dress warm.
  • On Wednesday of this week, December 11th, we will have a Reading Test that will focus on the first half (Chapters 1-6) of our text for this week, which is a novel called: Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing.
  • On Friday of this week, December 13th, we will be having an out of uniform day. Students can bring in a donation and wear a Christmas sweater.
