Ms. Courtney Garrity, Fourth Grade

Hello and welcome back! My name is Ms. Garrity and I am looking forward to beginning another school year here at St. John Fisher. This is my fifth year here at SJF, and I'm excited to be working with your child in fourth grade this year. Here are a few facts about me. I have worked at a school that specializes in Special Education. I received my teaching degree in Elementary Education from St. Xavier University. I love playing volleyball and watching Chicago sports teams, especially the Blackhawks. I have always had a passion for working with children from working at summer camps to teaching here at SJF. Even though I have just begun my career in the field of education, I continue to love teaching children and helping students to achieve their full potential. I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer! I'm looking forward to meeting you all on August 21, 2018! We are going to have a fantastic school year!

*I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!*

*In Reading this week, we will be focusing on some reading and writing activities, including a book of knowledge activity and we will also begin to work with our story from our hardcover Reading textbook called: Komodo Dragons. *Our skill for this week is: *Context Clues.* This week, we will be discussing and reviewing our story, as well as working with some discussion questions, activities and extended responses that focus on a review of our story for this week. We will also be practicing finding and locating text evidence to support our answers to our questions for this week as well. *We will have a Reading test on Friday of this week, March 29th, that will focus on our story for this week called: Komodo Dragons.* Students should study their vocabulary words as well as their notes and comprehension discussion questions for our story in preparation for the test on Friday of this week. In Reading this week, some of our skills that we will be focusing on will include working with and reviewing:  informational text, understanding and practicing using context clues, comprehension and analysis of nonfiction text,  comparing and contrasting, as well as practicing locating text evidence to support our answers. We will also be working on and practicing with some skills in our Reading workbook, answering extended responses, as well as working with Raz Kids on the iPads this week.

*A variety of different book reports will be assigned throughout the school year in Reading. The students were assigned their seventh book report. For this seventh "March Book Report," students should have chosen a fantasy book of their choice. The Fantasy Book Report was due by this past Wednesday, March 20th. Students are encouraged to turn in their book reports early, before the scheduled due date, if they are ready to be turned in.

*Also, students will be required to read and take quizzes on *8 books per trimester for Accelerated Reading.* There will also be due dates within the trimester for how many books should be read and AR quizzes taken. At least *1* of the 8 total books for the trimester needs to be a *nonfiction book.* *Also, please note that students need to earn a score of 70 percent or higher on their AR quizzes in order for them to receive credit for the ARs.*

*Students can now be reading and working on taking ARs that will count for the third trimester.*

*4th Grade – Accelerated Reader – Due Dates for the 3rd Trimester So Far*:

*2 books and AR quizzes were due by this past Tuesday, March 19th.*

**2 more books and AR quizzes (for a total of 4 all together) will be due by next Friday, April 5th.**

*In Social Studies class this week, we will continue learning about the different regions of the United States. This week, we will begin focusing on our second U.S. region: *the Northeast Region.* We will continue working with the Northeast Region this week by going over and reviewing the states and capitals, as well as discussing the key concepts about this region. We will also be working on reviewing and going over our study guide maps as well as making and practicing with our flashcards for this region as well. *We will have a test on the states and capitals of the Northeast Region of the United States this week, on Friday, March 29th.* Students should study their notes and study guide maps, their flashcards, as well as the map displaying all of the different regions of the United States on Page 81 in our hardcover textbook in preparation for the test on Friday of this week. Students should also be able to spell all of the states in the Northeast Region correctly on the test.

*In Spelling this week, we will begin with our *Unit 28* spelling words. We will have our twenty-eighth spelling test this upcoming Friday, March 29th on Unit 28.

*Reminders*:

  • Friday folders will go home this week. Please look over the contents of the folder and discuss your child's progress with him/her. You may keep the tests/quizzes that are in the folder. Also, the Friday folder should be signed and returned on Monday of next week.

We will continue working with Lesson 2 this week by discussing and reviewing the different sections, vocabulary, as well as the key concepts about this lesson. We will also be working on and going over our study guides for this lesson as well. *We will have a test on Lesson 2 of Unit 2 this week, on Wednesday, March 13th.* Students should study their vocabulary words, definitions, notes and study guides, as well as the map displaying all of the different regions of the United States on Page 81 in our hardcover textbook in preparation for the test on Wednesday of this week. We will also begin focusing on and learning about our first U.S. region this week: the Midwest Region.

*In Spelling this week, we will begin with our *Unit 26* spelling words. We will have our twenty-sixth spelling test this upcoming Friday, March 15th on Unit 26.

*In Reading this week, we will be finishing up presenting some of our Biography Book Reports, as well as focusing on some reading and writing activities, including a book of knowledge activity and beginning to work with our story from our hardcover Reading textbook called: The Swimming Hole. Our skill for this week is: themeStudents will be finishing up focusing on some interesting facts about their classmates' book reports and writing about these during the presentations as well. We will also have mini question and answer sessions after the presentations. This week, we will be discussing and reviewing our story, as well as working with some discussion questions, activities and extended responses that focus on a review of our story for this week. We will also be practicing finding and locating text evidence to support our answers to our questions for this week as well. *We will have a Reading test on Friday of this week, March 8th, that will focus on our story for this week called The Swimming Hole.* Students should study their vocabulary words as well as their notes and comprehension discussion questions for our story in preparation for the test on Friday of this week. In Reading this week, some of our skills that we will be focusing on will include working with and reviewing: theme, comprehension and analysis of fiction text, visualizing, comparing and contrasting, as well as practicing locating text evidence to support our answers.
