Ms. Courtney Garrity, Fourth Grade

Hello and welcome back! My name is Ms. Garrity and I am looking forward to beginning another school year here at St. John Fisher. This is my fifth year here at SJF, and I'm excited to be working with your child in fourth grade this year. Here are a few facts about me. I have worked at a school that specializes in Special Education. I received my teaching degree in Elementary Education from St. Xavier University. I love playing volleyball and watching Chicago sports teams, especially the Blackhawks. I have always had a passion for working with children from working at summer camps to teaching here at SJF. Even though I have just begun my career in the field of education, I continue to love teaching children and helping students to achieve their full potential. I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer! I'm looking forward to meeting you all on August 21, 2018! We are going to have a fantastic school year!

*I hope everyone had a wonderful Homecoming weekend!*

READING: In Reading this week, we will be learning about and practicing with our new skill for this week which is: Author's Purpose. This week, we will also begin our study of our fourth story in Unit 1 of our hardcover Reading book: Family Pictures. Our skill that we will be focusing on this week is: Author's Purpose. *Students will have their third Reading test this upcoming Friday, October 4th.* Students should study their vocabulary, skill notes and comprehension review questions (in their notebook) for the test on Friday of this week. Also, students will have their Reading Tests on Fridays, unless otherwise stated.

*A variety of different BOOK REPORTS will be assigned throughout the school year in Reading. Students will be assigned their second book report this week. For this second “October Book Report,” students may choose a mystery book of their choice. Students are encouraged to turn in their book reports early, before the scheduled due date, if they are ready to be turned in.

*Also, students will be required to read and take quizzes on 8 books per trimester for ACCELERATED READING. At least 1 of the 8 total books for the trimester needs to be a nonfiction book. There will also be due dates within the trimester for how many books should be read and AR quizzes taken.

4th Grade – Accelerated Reader – Due Dates for the 1st Half of the Trimester:

*2 books and AR quizzes were due by Wednesday, September 18th.*

**2 more books and AR quizzes (for a total of 4 all together) will be due by this upcoming Wednesday, October 2nd.**

SOCIAL STUDIES: In Social Studies this week, we will continue our study of the Earth and Map Skills. We will continue learning about and reviewing latitude and longitude, as well as how to use these concepts to locate and identify certain places and locations on a map of the United States, as well as on a map of the world. We will also be learning about how to use latitude and longitude to locate and identify certain places (such as continents) and bodies of water (such as oceans) on a map as well. We will have a quiz this week on latitude and longitude. *We will have our quiz on latitude and longitude this upcoming Thursday, October 3rd.* Students should study their latitude and longitude notes in the Social Studies section of their notebook, as well as their maps and practice problems.

SPELLING: In Spelling this week, we will begin with our Unit 6 spelling words. *This is a review unit.* The Review Unit Spelling Test for this week will consist of some Spelling words from each of our previous Spelling units. Students have highlighted the Spelling words that they will be tested on this week, in each of their Spelling books. We will have our sixth spelling test this Friday, October 4th on Unit 6.

  • On Tuesday, October 1st, we will have School Picture Day!
  • On Wednesday, October 2nd, we will have Special Lunch Day!

READING: In Reading this week, we will continue and finish up working with our second story in Unit 1 of our hardcover Reading book: Train to Somewhere. In class this week, we will be practicing with and working on a SLAM extended response question that relates to our story from last week, and also be discussing some important concepts about the main character from our story as well as finishing our writing. This week, we will also begin our study of our third story in Unit 1 of our hardcover Reading book: Yingtao's New Friend. Our skill that we will be focusing on this week is: compare and contrast. *Students will have their second Reading test this upcoming Friday, September 27th.* Students should study their vocabulary, skill notes and comprehension review questions (in their notebook) for the test on Friday of this week.  

*A variety of different BOOK REPORTS will be assigned throughout the school year in Reading. Students were assigned their first book report. For this first “September Book Report,” students may choose a fiction book of their choice. *The September Book Report will be due by this upcoming Tuesday, September 24th.* Students are encouraged to turn in their book reports early, before the scheduled due date, if they are ready to be turned in.

*I hope everyone had a wonderful 3-Day Weekend and enjoyed Fisher Fest!*

READING: In Reading this week, we will be finishing up sharing and presenting our final copies of our Summer Break Newspaper Articles. Students will be sharing their Summer Break writing activities with the class. I continue to look forward to hearing all about their summer experiences and adventures! This week, we will also continue and finish up our study of our first story in Unit 1 of our hardcover Reading book: A Visit with Grandpa. Our skill that we will be focusing on this week is: setting. *Students will have their first Reading test this upcoming TuesdaySeptember 17th.* Students should study their vocabulary, skill notes and comprehension review questions (in their notebook) for the test on Tuesday of this week. This week, we will also begin working with our second story in Unit 1 of our hardcover Reading book: Train to Somewhere. We will be practicing with SLAM this week as well, and also be working on some extended response questions related to our second story in our hardcover.

We will also be learning about how to use these to locate and identify certain places and bodies of water on a map. *We will have a quiz on the cardinal and intermediate directions, as well as hemispheres on Friday of this week, September 20th.* Students should study their notes, maps, and review sheet in preparation for the quiz on Friday.

SPELLING: In Spelling this week, we will begin with our Unit 4 spelling words. We will have our fourth spelling test this Friday, September 20th on Unit 4.

*I hope everyone had a fantastic Labor Day weekend and enjoyed their day off!*

*We had a great first full week of school last week! I have really been enjoying getting to know all of the new fourth graders, and they have been doing a wonderful job adjusting to fourth grade!*

READING: In Reading this week, we will finish up working on writing our final copies of our Summer Break Newspaper Articles. We will also be sharing our Summer Break writing activities with the class. This week, we will also be finishing up working with our Summer Reading Assignments. We will be going over what should be included in our Summer Reading paragraphs and presentations to the class. Students should have their notecards with them in class on the day that they will be presenting their Book Commercial (speech). We will finish up presenting our Summer Reading speeches in class this week. We will also have a mini question and answer session after the Summer Reading presentations as well. I continue to look forward to hearing all about their summer experiences as well as their Summer Reading adventures!

SOCIAL STUDIES: In Social Studies this week, we will continue our study of the Earth and Map Skills. We will be learning about and reviewing the continents and oceans, as well as how to locate and label them on a map. *Students will have a test this week on Friday, September 6th that will focus on all of the continents and major oceans.* Students should be able to locate, label and spell all the continents and major oceans correctly on a blank map of the world for their test this week. Students should study their maps and review sheets in preparation for the test on Friday.

SPELLING: In Spelling this week, we will begin with our Unit 2 spelling words. We will have our second spelling test this Friday, September 6th on Unit 2.

  • This upcoming Wednesday, September 4th, is Special Lunch sponsored by Barracos!
  • Wednesday, September 4th, is also Back to School Night. The 4th Grade Presentations will take place in Homeroom 212. The Presentation times are: 6:50-7:05, 7:10-7:25, and 7:30-7:45 PM. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone on Wednesday evening! Open House will be from 6:30-8:00 PM. See you then!
  • This upcoming Friday, September 6th, we will have our first All-School Mass of the school year at 1 PM. All are welcome to join us for this Mass.
