Week of February 20th - 24th

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend!

In Reading last week, we focused on our fifth story in Unit 3: Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. Our skill that we focused on from last week was: Drawing Conclusions. Last week, we worked on and discussed our comprehension questions as well as studied our vocabulary for our story. We also reviewed for our test on Rikki-Tikki-Tavi last week.

In Reading this week, we will continue to focus on our stories and skills from Unit 3. Our skills that we will be focusing on and reviewing this week are: . We will be learning about strategies for these skills and working with examples that focus on them. We will also be working on a workbook pages that focus on practice with our skills from Unit 3. We will be focusing on word study this week (example-Word Study: Plurals) as well as working and practicing with certain kinds of text that can be found throughout our stories from Unit 3. Students will be locating examples of these kinds of words and discussing the different ways that these kinds of words are formed. This week, we will be working with how we can find evidence for our answers to the pages that focus on Unit 3. We will also review for our Skills test next week. *Students will not have a Reading test this Friday, February 24th.* We will also be working on practicing with SLAM this week. This week, we will also be working with Raz Kids for Reading Comprehension practice on the ipads as well.

This week, we will also be reviewing and focusing on some word studies. We will be working and practicing with certain kinds of words and text that relate to certain word study skills and can also be found throughout our stories from Unit 3. Some of our word studies for this week focus on: Plurals, and Base Words. Students will be locating examples of these kinds of words that are found in our story and discussing the different ways that these kinds of words are formed. Students will also be working on workbook pages that focus on these word study skills. We will also be working on practicing with SLAM this week.

*A variety of different book reports will be assigned throughout the school year in Reading. Students were assigned their sixth book report for the month of February. *For this sixth “February Book Report,” students can choose a Biography (nonfiction) book of their choice.* Students were also given the format for the February Book Report as well. *The February Biography Book Report will be due next week, on Wednesday, March 1st.* *Students are encouraged to turn in their book reports early, before the scheduled due date, if they are ready to be turned in.*

*Also, students will be required to read and take quizzes on 8 books per trimester for Accelerated Reading. At least 1 of the 8 total books for the trimester needs to be a nonfiction book. There will also be due dates within the trimester for how many books should be read and AR quizzes taken.

*Students should now be working on reading books and taking AR quizzes for their 2nd trimester AR requirement.*

4th Grade – Accelerated Reader – Due Dates for the 2nd Trimester so far:

2 books and AR quizzes were due on Thursday, December 1st.

2 more books and AR quizzes (total of 4 books all together) were due by Thursday, December 22nd.

2 more books and AR quizzes (for a total of 6 books all together) were due by Friday, January 27th.

*2 more books and AR quizzes (for a total of 8 books all together including at least one nonfiction book) were due by this past Friday, February 17th.*

In Social Studies last week, we finished up our focus on Lesson 1 of Unit 2. We also began focusing on Lesson 2 of Unit 2 of our textbook. Lesson 1 focused on the geography and landforms of the United States. Last week, we also worked on answering the Check Understanding Questions as well as our Study Guide Review Questions for Lesson 1. We reviewed and prepared for our test on Lesson 1 and had our test last week as well. We also worked on an article and questions (that focused on Abraham Lincoln) for Presidents Day.

In Social Studies this week, we will continue focusing on Lesson 2 of Unit 2 of our textbook. This lesson focuses on the of the United States. This week, we will work on reading and discussing Sections A-C of Lesson 2. We will also be reviewing and preparing for our test next week. We will have our test on Lesson 2 of Unit 2 next week on Friday, March 3rd. Students should study their vocabulary, notes, review questions and study guides in preparation for the test on Friday of next week.

In Spelling this week, we will begin with our Unit 23 spelling words. We will have our twenty-third spelling test this Friday, February 24th on Unit 23.

*Reminders*

  • Friday Folders will go home this week. Please look over the contents of the folder and discuss your child's progress with him/her. You may keep the quizzes/tests that are in the folder. Also, the Friday Folder should be signed and returned on Monday of next week.
