Week of February 25th - March 1st

*I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!*

*In Reading this week, we will be finishing up presenting our Biography Book Reports, as well as focusing on some reading and writing activities, including a book of knowledge activity and finishing up with our story from our hardcover Reading textbook called: I Love Guinea Pigs. Our skill for this story is: text structure. Students will be finishing up focusing on some interesting facts about their classmates' book reports and writing about these during the presentations as well. We will also have mini question and answer sessions after the presentations. This week, we will be discussing and reviewing our story, as well as working with some discussion questions, activities and extended responses that focus on a review of our story for this week. We will also be practicing finding and locating text evidence to support our answers to our questions for this week as well. *We will have a Reading test on Tuesday of this week, February 26th, that will focus on our story for this week called I Love Guinea Pigs.* Students should study their vocabulary words as well as their notes and comprehension discussion questions for our story in preparation for the test on Tuesday of this week. In Reading this week, some of our skills that we will be focusing on will include working with and reviewing: text structure, comprehension and analysis of nonfiction and fiction text, visualizing, comparing and contrasting, as well as practicing locating text evidence to support our answers. We will also be working on and practicing with some pages in our Reading workbook, answering extended responses, as well as working with Raz Kids on the iPads this week.

*A variety of different book reports will be assigned throughout the school year in Reading. The students were assigned their sixth book report. *For this sixth "February Book Report," students should have chosen a *biography* book of their choice.* The February Biography Book Report was due by this past Wednesday, February 20th. Students will finish up presenting their biography book reports in class as well as writing down their interesting facts this week. Students are encouraged to turn in their book reports early, before the scheduled due date, if they are ready to be turned in.

*Also, students will be required to read and take quizzes on *8 books per trimester for Accelerated Reading.* There will also be due dates within the trimester for how many books should be read and AR quizzes taken. At least *1* of the 8 total books for the trimester needs to be a *nonfiction book.* *Also, please note that students need to earn a score of 70 percent or higher on their AR quizzes in order for them to receive credit for the ARs.*

*Students should now be finished working on taking ARs that will count for the second trimester.*

*4th Grade – Accelerated Reader – Due Dates for the 2nd Trimester*:

2 books and AR quizzes were due by Monday, December 3rd.

2 more books (for a total of 4 all together) were due by Friday, January 11th.

2 more books were due (for a total of 6 books all together) and AR quizzes by this past Monday, February 4th.

*2 more books were due (for a total of 8 books including at least 1 nonfiction book all together) and AR quizzes by this past Friday, February 22nd.*

*In Social Studies class this week, we will continue focusing on the topic of Landforms from our first lesson of Unit 2 as well as the different regions of the United States. *We will have a short quiz on locating and labeling the different landforms of the U.S. on map from Lesson 1 of Unit 2 this upcoming Wednesday, February 27th.* Students should study their landform vocabulary, notes and study guide map in preparation for the Landforms quiz on Wednesday. Also, this week, we will be continuing to learn all about some interesting facts about some additional states this week! We will be discussing information about our different states, as well as working on comparing and contrasting these different states that we chose to research. We will discuss and share our research, interesting facts and compare/contrast findings together in class this week as well. This week, we will also begin to focus on Lesson 2 of the second Unit in our hardcover textbook. We will begin reading, discussing and working with Lesson 2 this week.

*In Spelling this week, we will begin with our *Unit 24* spelling words. *This is a review unit.* We will have our twenty-fourth spelling test this upcoming Friday, March 1st on Unit 24.

*Reminders*:

  • Friday folders will go home this week. Please look over the contents of the folder and discuss your child's progress with him/her. You may keep the tests/quizzes that are in the folder. Also, the Friday folder should be signed and returned on Monday of next week.
