Week of October 23rd - 27th

Posted on Oct 23, 2017

Hello!

*I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather this past weekend!*

In Reading this week, we will be focusing on some paired texts as well as working on a Halloween themed writing activity. We will be learning about some environmental issues as well as the costs associated with sports while working with some paired passages and articles in our Time for Kids magazine. This week some of our skills that we will be focusing on will include: cause and effect, compare and contrast, context clues, as well as locating evidence to support our answers. We will also be practicing with writing some extended responses this week. Students will not have a Reading test this Friday, the 27th.

*A variety of different book reports will be assigned throughout the school year in Reading. Students were assigned their second book report. Students also should have received the form with the format for their book report as well. For this second “October Book Report,” students may choose a mystery book of their choice. *The October Book Report will be due by this upcoming Thursday, October 26th.* Students are encouraged to turn in their book reports early, before the scheduled due date, if they are ready to be turned in.

*Also, students will be required to read and take quizzes on 8 books per trimester for Accelerated Reading. At least 1 of the 8 total books for the trimester needs to be a nonfiction book. There will also be due dates within the trimester for how many books should be read and AR quizzes taken.

4th Grade – Accelerated Reader – Due Dates for the 1st Trimester:

2 books and AR quizzes were due by Tuesday, September 12th.

2 more books were due (total of 4 books all together) and AR quizzes by Friday, September 29th.

2 more books were due (total of 6 books all together) and AR quizzes by this past Friday, October 20th.

*2 more books are due (for a total of 8 books all together) – All 8 books (including at least 1 NF book) and AR quizzes for the trimester are due by next Friday, November 3rd.*

Happy Reading! :)

In Social Studies last week, we finished up our study of the Earth and learning all about Map Skills. We also finished up working on, discussing and going over the answers to our Mapping Skill worksheets and activities. In Social Studies this week, we will begin to focus on the first lesson of Unit 1 in our textbook, which focuses on the First Americans. We will be reading and discussing the sections of this lesson, working with the vocabulary, as well as answering our questions for this lesson. We will also begin our study of Native Americans. We will begin our unit by focusing on and learning all about the characteristics of several different Native American groups. We will also be discussing and working with timelines. We will be practicing locating events on a timeline and using concepts related to reading a timeline.

In Spelling this week, we will begin with our Unit 10 spelling words. We will have our tenth spelling test this Friday, October 27th on Unit 10.

Reminders:

  • Friday Folders will go home this week. Please look over the contents of the folder and discuss your child's progress with him/her. You may keep the quizzes/tests that are in the folder. Also, the Friday Folder should be signed and returned on Monday of next week.

*Hope you have a wonderful week!*
