Mrs. Laura Kovatch, Fourth Grade

Hi! My name is Laura Kovatch and I teach fourth grade Language Arts and Spelling. This is my fourteenth year here at St. John Fisher, and I feel so lucky to be part of such a wonderful school community. Outside of school, I love to travel and spend time with my family, especially my beautiful daughter Katelyn. I am looking forward to a wonderful school year together!

Happy Catholic Schools Week!  Thank you to everyone who came to open house.  It was so nice to see everyone, and we hope you enjoyed seeing some of the things we have been working on.  We have some special events this week in honor of Catholic Schools Week.  On Tuesday, we have a science assembly.  Wednesday is roll out of bed day.  Students can bring a breakfast snack, and we will have "Breakfast, Buddies, and Bingo." We will also have a performance by the St. Rita Band that afternoon. On Thursday we will be reading with our preschool buddies.  On Friday we will get ready for the Super Bowl by bringing in a can of soup and wearing our favorite football attire or SJF spirit wear.

Language Arts-We will start our unit on adjectives this week.  We will also begin unit 8 in our vocabulary books.  Last week we wrote and shared our snowman trait stories.  We had fun listening to the stories and guessing the meaning of the new words we heard.  We will begin a Valentine's writing assignment this week.

Science-We have been learning about mass, volume, and the three states of matter.  We will have a quiz on Friday.

Spelling-We are on Unit 20 this week, and our test will be on Friday.

Have a great week!

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.

Language Arts-This week we have our unit test on Wednesday.  Review sheets were assigned on Monday.  We will correct them and review on Tuesday in class.  We will also be working on a creative writing assignment this week.

Science-Last week we studied potential and kinetic energy.  We did an activity to find out how energy can be transferred when objects collide. This week we will start reviewing matter and mass.

Spelling-We are on Unit 19 this week, and our test will be on Friday.

We have Open House this Sunday!  Come by our room to see some of the things we have been working on!  I look forward to seeing everyone there!  Have a great week!

Last week in science, we did an investigation where the students found how the height of a ramp would affect the speed of a marble.  The students collected data and even calculated the average speeds of their trials. This was the perfect activity to show the relationship between speed and energy, and the kids had a great time.

Language Arts-This week we will be finishing our second unit on verbs.  We will have a unit test next Wednesday, the 25th.  We will have our unit 7 vocabulary quiz this Wednesday.

Yesterday our country celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  We have been learning all about Martin in class.  The students used the IPads to research Martin and then chose three character traits to describe him.  We then put all of our research together and wrote an essay. Final copies of Martin Luther King papers are due this Wednesday.

Science-We will continue our study of forces and energy.  We will be discussing the relationship between speed and energy, and we will also learn about potential and kinetic energy.

Spelling-We are on Unit 18 this week, and our test will be on Friday.

Have a great week!

Welcome Back!  I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year! Thank you to everyone for the lovely Christmas gifts.  I will enjoy everything I received, and I will put the gift cards and class gift to good use.  I am so appreciative of your kindness and generosity.

Before break we did some fun activities in science and language arts!  In science class we conducted an investigation called "Milk and Cookies.".  The students had to predict which of three different cookies would absorb the most milk.  The students used triple beam balances to measure the mass of the cookies before and after being submerged in milk.  They then recorded, graphed, and analyzed their data.  We had a great time!

In Language Arts, we learned about similes and metaphors.  We identified examples of each in Christmas sentences.  Then we used the song, "Mr. Grinch", to find other examples of similes and metaphors.  The students then selected their favorite one and created a poster illustrating and explaining their simile or metaphor.  Next, the students wrote their own verses of the song using their own similes and metaphors for the Grinch.  They really enjoyed passing the Grinch around to share their posters and  "sing" their verses with the class.  Finally, before we left on break we wrote Christmas poems and shared those with our classmates as well.

This week we will be jumping right back to work in all of our subjects!

Language Arts-We will begin learning about linking verbs this week.  We will also begin unit 7 in our vocabulary books and our next writing assignment.

Science-This week we will work on analyzing scientific articles and graphs using our Super Science magazines.  We will also introduce force and energy.  We will then move on to study different forms of energy more in-depth.

Spelling-We are on Unit 17 this week, and our test will be on Friday.

Have a great week!
