Mrs. Laura Kovatch, Fourth Grade

Hi! My name is Laura Kovatch and I teach fourth grade Language Arts and Science. This is my eleventh year here at St. John Fisher, and I feel so lucky to be part of such a wonderful school community. Outside of school, I love to travel and spend time with my family, especially my beautiful daughter Katelyn. I am looking forward to a wonderful school year together!

Week of September 25th

Posted on Sep 25, 2017

We are working through the heat here in Room 212.  The kids have been so good over these hot days!  The students can continue to bring water bottles on Monday and Tuesday.  Hopefully the forecast is correct, and we will be back to cooler temperatures on Wednesday.

Language Arts-This week we will finish up our study of subjects and predicates.  There will be a quiz on Thursday.  The quiz will cover complete, simple, and compound subjects and predicates.  Last week the students wrote about one of their favorite places to go or visit.  We typed them in the computer lab and shared them with the class. It was interesting to hear all the great descriptions the students wrote!  I need to create a list for myself of their suggested places to go!

Science-We have finished our study of matter.  There will be an open-packet test on Friday.  This week we will also begin our next unit: the animal kingdom and animal adaptations.

Spelling- We are on Unit 6 this week.  It is a review unit, so it will cover some words from our previous five units.  The students have the words for the week highlighted in their books.  Our test will be on Friday.

Have a terrific week!

I hope everyone had a fun-filled Fisher Fest weekend!

Language Arts-This week we will continue our study of subjects and predicates.  We will finish up learning about simple predicates and start learning about compound subjects and predicates.  This week we will also continue discussing how to write strong paragraphs, and we will be writing about a favorite place that we like to go.  We will even go to the computer lab to type our paragraphs using Google Docs.

Science-We will be discussing physical and chemical changes this week. Last week we went to the science lab where the students conducted an investigation on how the mass and volume of an object affect its density.  The students had a great time learning and working in their groups.

I hope everyone had a terrific weekend!  We have a short three day week this week, but we will be busy!

Language Arts-This week we will continue our study of subjects and predicates.  We will review complete subjects and predicates and start learning about simple subjects and predicates.  We will also continue with Unit 1 in our vocabulary book.  We will have our first vocabulary quiz next Tuesday, the 19th.  This week we will also be writing about a time when we made a difference to someone.  This connects to the book we read in class called The Little Chapel That Stood.  We will also continue studying the parts of a strong paragraph.

Science-We will continue our study of mass, matter, volume, and density.  We will also do an investigation to see how mass affects the density of an object.

Spelling-We are on Unit 4 this week, and our test will be on Friday.

Have a wonderful Fisher Fest weekend!

Last week in science class, the students had the opportunity to go to the science lab.  Here are some pictures of our 4th grade scientists working in the lab.  We learned all about the different equipment and vocabulary that scientists use in their investigations.  The students were so excited to be working in the lab!
