Mrs. Laura Kovatch, Fourth Grade

Hi! My name is Laura Kovatch and I teach fourth grade Language Arts and Spelling. This is my fourteenth year here at St. John Fisher, and I feel so lucky to be part of such a wonderful school community. Outside of school, I love to travel and spend time with my family, especially my beautiful daughter Katelyn. I am looking forward to a wonderful school year together!

Week of November 26th

Posted on Nov 28, 2018

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and a relaxing extended weekend.  I can't believe that we have a winter wonderland outside, and it is not December yet!  The snow has definitely put the students in the Christmas spirit!

I want to thank everyone for attending parent-teacher conferences last week.  It was so nice to talk with and get to know everyone better.  Thank you for your support and for your commitment to working together to ensure a successful year.

We have a surprise four-day week, and we will certainly be keeping busy...

Language Arts-We will continue learning about verbs.  This week we will be focusing on verbs in the past and future tenses. We will also begin unit 5 in our Vocabulary books and write an essay from our prompt of the week.

Science-We are beginning our study of the human body.  This week we will learn all about cells!

Spelling-We are on Unit 13 this week, and our test will be on Friday.

*Our field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry is next Tuesday, December 4th.  Thank you to all who volunteered to chaperone. I wish that we could take all who volunteered, but unfortunately it is not possible for this trip.  Notes were sent home to the parents who will chaperoning the trip.  If anything changes with your availability, please let me know.  Students should wear their gym uniforms that day, and will need to bring a lunch.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Have a terrific week!

Pictures Of Our Recent Work

Posted on Nov 19, 2018

At the end of our animal adaptation unit, students camouflaged butterflies around the room. Fellow students and teachers tried to find them all.  The kids did a great job!

See if you notice some of our creations in these pictures!

Today the students used Thanksgiving facts to review different parts of speech.  It was fun to move around the room, learn some facts about the holiday, and identify different parts of speech, including adverbs and prepositions!  I was very impressed with the conversations the kids had during the activity.

Week of November 19th-Happy Thanksgiving!

Posted on Nov 19, 2018

I can't believe that it is time for Thanksgiving!  I am so thankful for all of my wonderful students and their families! I look forward to talking with many of you at Parent Teacher Conferences.

We have an extremely short, but busy week.

In Language Arts, we will review parts of speech.  We also have our Unit 4 vocabulary quiz on Tuesday.  We will also read "Balloons Over Broadway" by Melissa Sweet.  The book tells the story of Tony Sarg, the original puppeteer of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

In Science, we will finish up our work with the "Extraordinary Eyes" article. Students will also be working on drawing diagrams of the eye, writing about how our eye works, and describing some of the incredible eye adaptations animals have!

On Tuesday we have our Thanksgiving prayer service at 10:30.  All are welcome to join us!  Students will then be dismissed at 11:30.

Have a wonderful week.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend!  This is the first week of the second trimester.  I can't believe how fast the year is going!  Report Cards will be distributed on Wednesday.  Please sign and return the envelope on Thursday.  We will definitely be keeping busy this week and getting lots of learning in before Thanksgiving break begins next Tuesday.

Language Arts-This week we will continue our unit on verbs.  We will be discussing present tense verbs this week.  We will also be working on Unit 4 in our vocabulary books.  This week we will also be writing letters of thanksgiving to important people in our lives.

The students will also be conducting a short research project on different animal eyes during computer class this week.

Spelling-We are on Unit 12 this week, and our test will be on Friday.

Have a wonderful week!

Thanks to everyone for bringing in Halloween treats for the kids to enjoy! Have a terrific week!

Here are some pictures from Halloween.  In Language Arts we worked on our descriptive writing skills and created our own monsters.  The students wrote descriptions and then read their pieces to other students, who drew a picture based on the description.  The students had a ton of fun sharing their descriptions and creating their drawings!  We also enjoyed some Halloween treats and played Halloween Science Bingo!
