Mrs. Laura Kovatch, Fourth Grade

Hi! My name is Laura Kovatch and I teach fourth grade Language Arts and Spelling. This is my fourteenth year here at St. John Fisher, and I feel so lucky to be part of such a wonderful school community. Outside of school, I love to travel and spend time with my family, especially my beautiful daughter Katelyn. I am looking forward to a wonderful school year together!

I hope everyone had a terrific weekend!  We have a busy and fun-filled week this week in 4th grade!

Language Arts-We have completed our unit on nouns, and we will be reviewing those concepts this week.  Our test will be on Wednesday, November 6th.  We have also completed unit 3 of our vocabulary book, and we have our quiz on Tuesday.  We have also been practicing our descriptive writing skills by creating monsters.  This week we will be sharing our writing with our classmates and creating drawings based on our descriptions.  The students are really excited to share their monsters!

Science-We are continuing our study of animal structures and adaptations.  Our test on this unit will be Tuesday, November 12th.  

Spelling-We are on Unit 10 this week, and we will have a test on Friday.

*On Thursday we will celebrate Halloween.  4th graders can be in costume that day and can bring a treat to pass out to the class.  We have 20 students in our class.

Week of October 21st

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend!

Language Arts-We will continue our study of nouns this week.  We will finish discussing plural nouns and will then move on to possessive nouns.  This week we will also begin working on Unit 3 in our vocabulary books.  We will also be working with the mentor text “I Need My Monster” this week and doing some grammar and descriptive writing activities to accompany the book.

Science- We are beginning our unit on the structures and functions of animals. This week we will be reviewing the characteristics of the different vertebrate groups.  We will then move on to discuss structural and behavioral adaptations of different animals.

Spelling-We are on Unit 9 this week, and our test will be on Friday.

Week of October 14th

I hope everyone enjoyed their three-day weekend!  

Language Arts-This week we will begin our unit on nouns.  We have finished Unit 2 in our Vocabulary Book, and we have a quiz on Wednesday, the 16th.   Final copies of our favorite subject writing assignment are due on Friday.  We will then do some Halloween-themed writing projects! 

Science-We have finished our unit on plant adaptations. Our test is this Thursday, the 17th.  We will then move on to study animal adaptations. 

Spelling-We are on Unit 8 this week, and we will have a test on Friday.  

On Friday, the 18th, we have an all-school mass.  Mass is at 1:00, and all are welcome to join us!

Week of October 7th

I’m so glad that the cooler weather seems to finally have arrived for good!  Here is a look at what is happening this week in 4th Grade Language Arts and Science!

Language Arts-We have completed our first grammar unit.  We will have our first unit test this Thursday, the 10th.  We will also be working through Unit 2 in our Vocabulary book. We will have our Unit 2 Vocabulary Quiz on Wednesday, October 16th.  The students will also be finishing up their final copies of their “Favorite Subject” writing pieces this week. 

Science-We are coming to the end of our unit on plant adaptations.  This week we will be doing some additional activities on how certain plants survive in certain environments.  We will have our test on plant adaptations on Thursday, October 17th

Spelling-We are on Unit 7 this week, and our test will be on Friday.
