Mrs. Laura Kovatch, Fourth Grade

Hi! My name is Laura Kovatch and I teach fourth grade Language Arts and Science. This is my eleventh year here at St. John Fisher, and I feel so lucky to be part of such a wonderful school community. Outside of school, I love to travel and spend time with my family, especially my beautiful daughter Katelyn. I am looking forward to a wonderful school year together!

Week of May 27th and Rocket Day

Posted on May 28, 2019

I hope everyone enjoyed their Memorial Day weekend, even with yesterday's storms.

We have a short, but busy week! We have our rocket launch on Thursday, so please pray for good weather!  As a reminder, the students can be out of uniform that day, and they need to bring a bag lunch.  All are welcome to come watch the launch at Beverly Park.  I hope to begin at about 9:15.  Let me know if you have any questions!

Language Arts-We will be reviewing some concepts this week.  We will also be sharing our "Mission to Mars" journals.

Science-In conjunction with Rocket Day, we will be learning all about rockets: how they work, how they launch into space, and the history of them.

Spelling-We are on Unit 35 this week, and our test will be on Friday.

Have a wonderful week, and I hope to see you at the launch!

Week of May 20th and Rocket Day Info

Posted on May 24, 2019

I can't believe how close we are getting to the end of the school year!  This week we completed our grammar unit on pronouns and our solar system unit.  We finished writing our "Mission to Mars" journals and wrote about the place we would most like to visit in our solar system. The students have also been working on creating IMovies about the planets, which we will continue working on next week.  The students have really enjoyed learning all about the planets and our solar system.

Our rockets are built and ready for launching.  The students had a great time naming, decorating, and building their rockets.  Thank you so much to our parent volunteers!  I couldn't have done it without you!  We will be launching them on Thursday the 30th, so pray for good weather! Everyone is welcome to come to Beverly Park and watch the launch.  I hope to begin between 9:15 and 9:30.

On launch day, students may be out of uniform. Students are not allowed to wear sandals.  We will be eating lunch at the park, so all students need to bring a bag lunch.

I hope everyone enjoys their Memorial Day weekend!

Here are our class pictures with our rockets!

Week of May 13th

Posted on May 13, 2019

Happy Monday!  I can't believe that we getting to the end of the year!   I hope everyone enjoyed their Mother's Day weekend!

Language Arts-We will continue working on pronouns in grammar.  This week we will be discussing possessive pronouns and contractions with pronouns.  Our last grammar unit test is scheduled for Friday, May 24th.

Science-We will continue our study of the solar system.  This week we will finish up learning about the outer planets!  After this, we will have completed our journey through the solar system! Our solar system test will be on Thursday, May 23rd.  We have also been working with an article from our Super Science magazine entitled "Destination: Mars."  We will be using this article to help us create our own "Mission to Mars" Journals, where the students will be writing as if they are one of the astronauts chosen to be the first humans on Mars.

Spelling-We are on Unit 33 this week, and our test will be on Friday.

Have a wonderful week!

*Thank you to everyone who volunteered to help build and launch our rockets!  We had so many volunteers to help launch, and I wish we could use everyone.  Please know that even if you weren't picked to help at the launch, you can still come to the launch!  Everyone is welcome to come to the park and watch the launches!  We do still have a couple of spots available to help build rockets on the 21st, so if you are interested in helping let me know!

**We had a great time reviewing for our figurative language test last week by doing a "gallery walk."  The kids had a great time working with their groups and moving around the room to identify different types of figurative language.  Here are some pictures!
