Mrs. Laura Kovatch, Fourth Grade

Hi! My name is Laura Kovatch and I teach fourth grade Language Arts and Science. This is my eleventh year here at St. John Fisher, and I feel so lucky to be part of such a wonderful school community. Outside of school, I love to travel and spend time with my family, especially my beautiful daughter Katelyn. I am looking forward to a wonderful school year together!

I hope everyone had a terrific Homecoming weekend!  The students had so much fun participating in the special theme days and at the pep rally on Friday!

Language Arts- We had fun getting out of our seats to review subjects and predicates last week!

This week we will be discussing compound and complex sentences.  We have completed the first unit in our vocabulary book.  We will have a vocabulary quiz on Tuesday.  We will also begin planning and drafting our next writing piece. 

Science-This week we will be studying some adaptations that plants have that help them survive in different environments!

Spelling-We are on Unit 6 this week.  Unit 6 is a review unit, and our test will include words from each of our previous units. Students have marked the tested words in their Spelling books.  We will have our test on Friday.

Week of September 23rd

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!  I know the students and I are excited to finally have some cooler weather this week! 

Language Arts-This week we will finish up with simple subjects and predicates.  We will then move on to study compound and complex sentences.  We are also working through the first unit in our vocabulary book.  We will have our first vocabulary quiz next Tuesday, October 1st.  During writing this week, students will be finishing up their pieces about their favorite place.  Final copies will be due on Friday. 

Science-This week we will continue learning about plant structures and their functions.  There will be a quiz on Friday.  The quiz will include our vocabulary words for this unit and the jobs of the different parts of plants (leaves, stem, roots, flowers, and fruit). We will then move on and discuss how these structures help plants survive in their different environments. 

Spelling-We are on Unit 5 this week, and our test will be on Friday.  

*Reminders:   Thursday is an early dismissal.  Students will be dismissed at 1:45.

I hope everyone enjoyed Fisher Fest weekend!  We are ready for a full week of school this week!

Language Arts-This week we will be discussing simple subjects and predicates.  We will also be finishing up our qualities of a good friend writing assignment.  Final copies are due on Wednesday.  We have also been discussing the parts of a strong paragraph and some pre-writing/planning strategies.  We will put all that we learned to use this week as we plan and write about our our favorite places to go.  

Science-We have finished our unit on graphing, but we will continue analyzing graphs throughout the course of the year.  This week we will begin learning about plant structures and their functions.  We will then discuss how these structures help plants survive in their different environments. 

Spelling-We are on Unit 4 this week, and our test will be on Friday.

*Reminders: -The final day for Scholastic Book Orders is Tuesday, the 17th.

                     -Special Lunch forms are due by Friday.

Here are some pictures from our classes last week.  We worked in small groups to review the types of sentences and to find and color-code parts of a paragraph.  We also worked hard on our "Qualities of a Good Friend" writing assignment that accompanied our mentor text, "Enemy Pie."  We also read "The Little Chapel That Stood" and "The Man Who Walked Between the Towers" and made kindness pledges in honor of September 11th.

Week of September 9th

I hope everyone had a nice weekend!

It's another shortened week this week and Fisher Fest is upon us!  There is no school for students this Friday, September 13th.  

Language Arts-This week we will continue discussing complete subjects and complete predicates.  We will then move on to simple subjects and predicates.  On Wednesday we have a quiz on the types of sentences.  This week we will also be finishing up our "Wanted: A Good Friend" writing assignment.  

Science-We will complete our graphing mini-unit this week.  There will be a quiz on Thursday.  

Spelling-We are on Unit 3 this week, and our test will be on Thursday!

Week of September 2nd

I hope everyone enjoyed their Labor Day weekend!  

We have a short, but busy, week ahead in 4th Grade! 

Language Arts-This week we will continue to study the four types of sentences.  We will also begin learning about complete subjects and predicates.  In Writing we will be discussing the parts of a paragraph and working to identify those parts in some different writing samples. 

Science-We will continue learning about how to analyze and create graphs.  We will be using data to make our own bar and line graphs this week!  There will be a graphing quiz next Thursday, September 12th

Spelling-We are on Unit 2 this week, and our test will be on Friday. 

*Wednesday is Barraco’s Special Lunch Day

**Wednesday is also our Back to School Night from 6:30-8:00! The 4th grade presentations will be in my homeroom, Room 212. There will be three 4th grade presentation times: 6:50-7:05, 7:10 - 7:25, and 7:30 - 7:45.  Please let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing you there and sharing more about 4th grade with you!

*Our first all school mass will be this Friday at 1:00.  All are welcome to join us!

In Language Arts last week, students presented their "Brown Bag Biographies".  The students did such a good job, and I loved learning some new things about everyone!  Here are some pictures of the students and some of their favorite things.
