Mrs. Laura Kovatch, Fourth Grade

Hi! My name is Laura Kovatch and I teach fourth grade Language Arts and Spelling. This is my fourteenth year here at St. John Fisher, and I feel so lucky to be part of such a wonderful school community. Outside of school, I love to travel and spend time with my family, especially my beautiful daughter Katelyn. I am looking forward to a wonderful school year together!

Week of August 30th

Posted on Aug 30, 2021

We had a great first few days of school last week!  This week we will be jumping right into our full schedule of learning!  Here is some important information for Language Arts this week:

Reading and Spelling:  Our story this week is from the book “Flora and Ulysses” by Kate DiCamillo.  We will work on the skills of author’s purpose and graphic features.  The students will bring home a list of the vocabulary words and spelling words from each week’s story on Monday.  We will have a Spelling and a Reading test each Friday, unless otherwise noted.  The Reading test will include a section on vocabulary words, multiple choice questions about the story, and a couple short answer questions based on the skills we have covered that week.

In terms of Reading homework, each week the students will receive a short article/story and will have a few, short questions to answer each day.  We will go over these questions daily and the students will get credit for completing their assignments each week.  Each week’s homework will concentrate on a specific reading skill, and we will also be able to use these articles to help us practice our written responses to texts.  Students should also read for 20 minutes each night.  Over the course of this trimester, the students will also need to take Accelerated Reader tests.  The students will need to accumulate at least 8 AR points by the end of the first trimester.  Finally, we will again be utilizing the IReady program.  Students will need to complete 45 minutes of lessons each week.  Students will receive credit for completing all of their minutes each week. *We will not begin IReady until after Labor Day.

Writing:  This week we will be using the mentor text “First Day Jitters” to help us reflect on our own first day feelings in our first writing assignment, “My First Day in Emojis”.  We will also begin discussing the characteristics of the different types of writing and what makes a strong paragraph.

Please reach out with any questions!  Have an awesome week!  Don’t forget to follow us at @funin4thsjf on Instagram to see all of the fun we have each week!

August 2021

Dear Fourth Grade Parents,

We are honored to have the privilege of teaching your fourth grade student this school year. The next nine months promise to be ones of excitement, discovery, and challenge as we guide these curious and motivated students to academic achievement in all subject areas.  This year will again be different than years past and will present some new challenges to us all, but together we will work through them and have a terrific year!

The fourth graders will have Mrs. Kovatch for Language Arts (Reading and Writing) and Spelling, Mrs. Sullivan and Mrs. Hughes for Math and Science, and Mrs. Namoff for Grammar, Social Studies, and Religion.

We will continue with the Go Math series this year. The curriculum includes interactive lessons and technological supports for the students. The students will have a username and password to log-on and access the series’ webpage.  Simple Solutions assignments, IXL Math, Reflex, and IReady will all be included this year as well. Also, regular flashcard practice of all four math operations, especially multiplication and division, should be done on an on-going basis in order to ensure mastery.  We recommend you practice with your child several times a week.

In Language Arts class this year, we will continue using the school-wide series, Into Reading.  Our curriculum will focus on short stories within the reader, which will help students develop strategies to reinforce and teach skills necessary for reading and comprehension success.  Students will also be utilizing IReady and Accelerated Reader this year.  The students’ writing skills will also be enhanced through a variety of writing projects designed to increase their ability to write narrative, descriptive, opinion/persuasive, and expository reports. Spelling tests will be given every Friday.

Grammar class will focus on an increased study of the parts of speech and punctuation. Students will be utilizing Sadlier’s “Grammar Workshop” book this year.

The Religion series provides a combination of engaging bible stories, profiles of saints, morality lessons, and prayer to foster the spiritual development of every child. Grades in Religion will include: quizzes, tests, and projects.

In Science class this year, students will be learning about many exciting topics including: Plant and Animal Adaptations, Earth’s Changing Features, and Energy and Motion.

Social Studies class will begin with a study of the geography of the world and map skills. Students will also learn about the geography of the United States, including a study of our country’s regions and the fifty states, as well as their capitals. This year, students will also study the history of our country and our state.

Finally, Handwriting will be an important skill practiced throughout the year in all classrooms

Students will receive a copy of their specials schedule during our first week. This year we will not be utilizing weekly folders, so please check your child’s eight-pocket folder daily for any graded papers and check Powerschool regularly to stay updated on your child’s progress.

A new and exciting change is that Chromebook computers will be assigned to each fourth grade student this year.  All of the teachers have created Google Classrooms for each of the subjects they teach.  We would like all of the students to log-in to their accounts and join all of their classes as soon as possible.  Students will receive their log-in information and the codes for each of their classes, and we will provide you with your child’s account information and detailed instructions for getting logged-in and joining classes during the first week of school.

For email communication this year, teachers will be using their Google accounts. This way, students and parents can both email teachers directly.  Our email addresses are:  Mrs. Kovatch-, Mrs. Sullivan-, Mrs. Hughes-, Mrs. Namoff-  Please feel free to email us at any time with any questions or concerns.  You can also check our blogs on the school website each week.

We look forward to an exciting and fulfilling year with your student!
