Goal Getters 2018

Posted on Oct 15, 2018

Dear Kindergarten Families,

Our kindergarteners are working hard on being “Goal Getters”!

Upon accomplishing the first goal, you child joins the “Alphabet Aces”.

Alphabet Aces Membership requirements: recognize and name all upper case and lower case letters.

Next month’s requirements will include being able to make the sound for each letter!

No need to panic!  There is no time limit on joining the group!  Some children are already qualified to join the group while others will be working on reaching their goals!  We practice our letters and sounds every day in school.  Maybe one day our whole class will be members!

Each new member will receive a certificate and a trip to the Sox Jar!

Congratulations and keep practicing!

October News

Dear Kindergarten Families,

Now that it’s October, we are in for some “frightening” good times!  Our theme for the month will surprisingly be “Halloween!”

While diligently working to cover all of our skills, our lessons will focus on this very fun, very popular theme!

Letters A through Z were introduced during the month of September.  The children should practice recognizing and writing the upper and lower case letters.  We will be introducing sounds this month.  Mm is the first letter sound that we learn. Your child should know the name, shape, sound and sign for the letter. (Of course we begin with a very difficult letter to form!)  We are depending on you for plenty of practice at home!  By the way, we have heard about all the name writing practice!  Thank You!  Now you can add letters to your “fun things to do at home” list!

Religion:   Noah’s Ark, Baptism, our 5 senses, and Bible stories

Reading Skills:  Name, shape, sound and sign language for letters: Mm, Tt, Aa and Ss.

Word Wall Words:  I, am, little, the (September)

to, a, is, have (have been added during October)

*Please make flash cards and practice reading these words at home.

Math:   Count and write numbers 6-9.  Compare numbers to 10

Science:  More ocean fun and nocturnal animals

Art:  Halloween!!  Halloween!!  Halloween!!

Upcoming Special Attractions:

Monday, October  8 ~ Columbus Day, No school

Wednesday, October 31 ~ Halloween!!!  We will be having a Halloween party and of course we’ll be begging for your help!  More details will come home soon.  As you can see, our little “goblins and goblettes” will have plenty of fun this month!  This is definitely a favorite season in the life of a kindergarten student AND teacher!

Thanks!   BOO!   The Kindergarten Witches ?!

Beach Party 2018

Beach Party

Dear Kindergarten Families,

On Friday, September 28th, the kindergarten children will be going on an imaginary trip!  We will be taking an early morning flight to Hawaii where we will have a beach party!

Please have your child wear his/her bathing suit under play clothes.  (no uniforms allowed at the beach!)

We will be boarding our plane at gates  # 110, 113 and 114. This will be a direct flight with no layovers.  Estimated flight time: 49 seconds.  We are hoping for very little turbulence so we won’t have to use the dreaded barf bags!!  After a “wikiwiki” (SPEEDY) flight, the fun begins!  We will play some fishy games, have a fishy snack, and maybe do a hula dance!  We might even see a movie on the flight home!

*Please have your little “beach bum” bring a towel with his/her name on it.

We are looking forward to a wonderful trip!  (Now you can see why we teach kindergarten—the fun never stops!)

                                         Mahalo and Aloha!

                           Your BEAUTIFUL flight attendants,

Mrs. Mary Donna Caffrey, Mrs. Nancy Fanjoy, and Mrs. Beth Foran

P.S.  Any child uncomfortable with the idea of wearing a bathing suit may just wear play clothes!

P.P.S.  Please be responsible parents and remember the sunscreen!! J

ABC's of Kindergarten

Posted on Aug 23, 2018

Welcome to Kindergarten!

Kindergarten is an exciting time for students, parents and teachers as well. We have outlined a few things you should know as the Kindergarten year begins for you and your child.

There are three Kindergarten classes at St. John Fisher: Mrs. Foran Room 114, Mrs. Caffrey Room 110, and Mrs. Fanjoy Room 113.

The ABC’s of Kindergarten:
Absences
If your child is ill please report his or her absence to the school office at 773-445-4737 before 8:00.

Birthdays
Birthdays are a special time for everyone. If your child would like to bring in a treat to share with their class there are 19 students in my class. Please no peanuts, peanut butter, cakes or cupcakes.

Conferences
Parent-Teacher Conferences are November 19th and 20th.

Discipline
The stoplight method is used in each classroom. Each child starts the day on green. If behavior becomes a problem, he/she will be moved to yellow as a caution. They will be held from playtime for ten minutes. In the behavior continues to be a problem he/she will be moved to red and held from playtime for the day. Hitting, shoving, throwing things are all behaviors that merit an automatic red light.

Early Dismissals
Early dismissals are noted in the calendar and in our Monthly newsletters.

Field Trips
During the year we may take a few field trips. We will ask for Parent Chaperones. You must be Virtus Trained and have all paperwork on file in the office. Forms can be found on our web site.

Grading
Kindergarten Report Cards are sent home at the end of each trimester. The grades are 1-Needs Improvement, 2-Satisfactory, and 3-Outstanding

Homework
Your child will receive a Monthly Homework Calendar. You are encouraged to complete the task with your child each night. Math homework will also come home in their folder. Please practice their Word Wall Words each night also.

Illness
If your child is ill or has a fever, please keep him/her home. Children must be
fever free for 24 hours before they may return to school.

Journals
Your child will be writing in a journal to promote reading and writing skills and creativity.

Kindergarten Snacks
Your child should bring in a healthy snack and drink each day. We have lunch at 10:30 so they are hungry in the afternoon. Send a snack on half days also. Please put their snack in a separate bag marked snack.

Lunch
Students should bring a lunch each day. The Hot Lunch Program does not start until September. Three times a year forms are sent home fo
r “Special Lunch”, that is once a month from a local restaurant such as Barraccos, McDonalds etc.

Money
If you send money to school with your child please put it in an envelope or baggie
with your child’s name and room number.

News
We send home a Monthly News Letter at the beginning of each month. Look for it in
your child’s folder.

Open House
Open House is Thursday, September 30
th. Details to follow.

Parent-Teacher Communication
Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher with any concerns or questions through our email, @ sjfschool.net.

Quiet Time
There will be a
daily “Brain Break” quiet resting time each day.

Respect
We stress the importance of showing respect.

Supplies
A supply list is also on our website.

Times and Locations
The start of the school day is 7:50. Children in Mrs. Caffrey’s room line up on the Fairfield side, south door across from the convent. Mrs. Fanjoy’s and Mrs. Foran's room lines up at the corner of the Courtyard off Washtenaw driveway, next to Mrs. Fanjoy’s Classroom windows.

Understanding
Our goal is for each child to be able to understand and grasp the lessons taught to them. Each child is different; so many different approaches may be used to meet this goal.

Volunteers
Throughout the year we may need volunteers. If you would like to be a volunteer you must be Virtus trained and have all paperwork on file in the office. Forms are available on our website under the Parent
s section.

Weather
Please dress your child appropriately for the weather.

“X”amine Backpacks
Remember to take time each day to go through and empty out your child’s backpack and daily folder. Notes and important information will come home in their folders.

You
As your child’s parent, you are their first teacher. You know your child the best. Please use this knowledge in helping your child with his/her education. Please practice the letter names and sounds, sight words, counting, dressing skills(tying, buttoning, zippering, and snapping) and other skills we may be working on at the time.

Zzzzzzzz
Make sure your child gets enough sleep each night. Five and six year olds need a lot of sleep! A fully rested child makes a better and more eager learner!

Our first day of school was GREAT!  We put away a TON of supplies and talked about TWO TONS of school rules!  We took a tour of the school and we are very excited that our “special” classes are beginning!  Please notice our schedule and mark your calendar:

Monday: Computer

Tuesday: Art/Library – we alternate every other week for Art/Library class

Wednesday:  Gym-please wear gym uniform and gym shoes! (be sure to put name on sweatshirt)

Thursday:  Music

Friday:  Mass

Birthdays:  Birthday treats are welcome!  We have 19 children in our class!  Please do not send any treats that contain peanuts or peanut butter.

We will break for a much needed snack each afternoon.  Lunch is at 10:30 and our growing kindergarten children do get VERY hungry! Please be sure to send a small snack and juice box or water in a separate bag or separate backpack pocket labeled for snack every day.  Please do not pack snack along with lunch!  This can be super confusing and result in a kindergarten tragedy!

Please note any supplies you may have forgotten:

_____take home folder

_____spiral notebook (journal)

_____Kindergarten Questionnaire (We will give this at Open House)

_____paint shirt

_____Binder

_____head phones

*Please be aware that parents may not enter the school building with the children after today.  This is a school rule enforced for the safety of our children.

Looking forward to a great year!!    Mrs. Mary Donna Caffrey

Things To Practice At Home

Posted on Sep 28, 2016

Important Things to Practice at Home!

Cutting:  thumb in the little hole, fingers in the large hole.  Remember:  “Thumbs up!” when cutting.  Cutting up the columns of the newspaper is great practice!

Please practice printing first and last name!  Only the FIRST letters should be upper case!  If needed, you can write your child’s name with highlighter for him/her to trace.  Please make an effort to help your child hold his/her pencil correctly.  Stetro pencil grip (available at the teacher store) is a wonderful tool to help your child with this difficult skill.

Please practice letter recognition and initial sounds!  Please practice forming letters and numbers.  Children may add touch points to numbers when ready.

These skills require a lot of practice and adult supervision.  Your efforts at home are greatly appreciated!

Thank You!
