Mrs. Maura Grochocinski, Junior High Religion

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year.  We are all looking forward to a successful school year with your child. 

A little about myself: due to the difficulty in pronouncing my last name, I am known to the SJF students and to many of the parents as “Mrs. G.”  I live in Most Holy Redeemer parish and my husband and I have been blessed with three wonderful daughters. 

This year will be my 20th year teaching at Saint John Fisher. I have taught different grades and various subjects throughout the years. I have enjoyed teaching religion in the Jr. High for the past ten years, watching our students grow both academically and spiritually.

I'm looking forward to an exciting school year with our Jr. High students and can't wait to see them on their first day of school, Wednesday, August 21st.

7th & 8th Grade Religion-Week of April 3rd

Progress Report check is Wednesday, April 5th.  Please sign on to power school and be advised of grades recorded in each subject as of this date.  Don't forget...FINISH STRONG!

***7th Grade Religion***

This week we will be continuing on with our study of Judaism and will be focusing on the rituals and obligations of worship.  We will also be discussing the origin of Jewish holy days/holidays as well as how they are celebrated.

*All Students should continue to work on their FIVE hours of required service for this third trimester.

***8th Grade Religion***

This week we will be finishing chapter 9 which discusses the Church's views on topics such as premarital sex, birth control, adultry, and homosexuality.  We will be taking the test on this material on Wednesday of this week. 

***UPDATE Chapter 9 Morality Test has been changed to Thursday 4/6

*All Students should continue to work on their EIGHT hours of required service for this third trimester.

 

7th & 8th Grade Religion-Week of March 27th

***7th Grade Religion***

This week, we will begin our unit on Judaism.  We will be discussing the origin, beliefs, and practices of those who practice Judaism.  We will begin this unit by discussing the roles that both Abraham and Moses played in the early history of Judaism.

***Students should continue to work on their FIVE hours of required service for this third trimester.

***8th Grade Religion***

This week we will be discussing chapter 9 in our Morality book.  We will be discussing the Catholic Church's views on topics such as premarital sex, homosexuality, and birth control.  Father Ken will also be celebrating our third and final mass in the classroom on Thursday.

***Students should continue to work on their EIGHT hours of required service for this third trimester.

7th & 8th Grade Religion-Week of March 13th

***7th Grade Religion***

This week we will be winding up our study of Hinduism and will be taking the quiz on Hinduism this Wednesday.  We will be correcting comprehension questions from the unit Tuesday which will help prepare students for the quiz the following day.  On Thursday, we will be reviewing for the test on Buddhism/Hinduism scheduled for Friday.

***UPDATE: The test on Buddhism/Hinduism will be Tuesday, March 21st.

***All students should continue to work on their FIVE hours of required service for this third trimester.

 

***8th Grade Religion***

This week we will be finishing our discussion on chapter 8 in our Morality book which discusses the Church's views on capital punishment, abortion, euthanasia, and suicide.  We will be taking the chapter 8 test later in the week.

7th & 8th Grade Religion-Week of March 6th

Last week we discussed our Lenten promises and how important it is that we FAST from those things that weaken our relationship with God as well as FEAST upon those things that bring us closer to God.  May we all remain strong with our thoughtful promises during this Lenten season.

***7th Grade Religion***

This week we will be continuing on with our study of Hinduism.  We will be discussing the places and practices of Hindu worship as well as the rituals connected to significant events such as birth, marriage, and death.  As we continue our study of Hinduism, we are comparing and contrasting Hinduism with the two other religions we have discussed so far this year, Catholicism and Buddhism. 

***All Students should be continuing to satisfy their FIVE hours of required service for this third trimester.

***8th Grade Religion***

This week we will be covering chapter 8 in our Morality book,  This chapter discusses the the 5th commandment, though shalt not kill, how this commandment pertains to the life of an eighth grader, and our call to be peacemakers here on earth.  This chapter also discusses the Catholic church's view on controversial topics in our society such as euthanasia and capital punishment. 

The first period class who celebrated mass in the classroom last week, will be taking the chapter 6 test on Tuesday of this week.
