Mrs. Maura Grochocinski, Junior High Religion

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year!  I am looking forward to a unique and successful school year with your child.

A little about myself: due to the difficulty in pronouncing my last name, I am known to the SJF students and to many parents as “Mrs. G.”  I live in Most Holy Redeemer parish and my husband and I have been blessed with three wonderful daughters, a son-in-law, and a new grandson, Martin McGrath Guinane.

This year will be my 21st year teaching at Saint John Fisher. I have taught different grades and various subjects throughout the years. I have enjoyed teaching religion in the Jr. High for the past eleven years, watching my students grow both academically and spiritually.

7th & 8th Grade Religion-Week of Sept. 3rd

Posted on Aug 31, 2018

It was great to see and meet so many of our Jr. High parents last Wednesday at the Back to School Curriculum Night.  Working together, I'm confident that we can make this a successful and enjoyable year for all.  This week, the eighth grade class will be hosting our beginning of the year all school mass on Friday, September 7th, at 1:00.  All are welcome to attend!

**Mass time has been changed to 10:00.

At mass, we will be introducing this year's theme to the rest of the students: Faith to Move Mountains.  We will also be discussing Prayer Partners, students from various grade levels pairing up to celebrate and share their faith together at mass, in the classroom, and during activities.

This week, we will be completing and correcting the review exercises and study guide for chapter one in our Blest Are We bookSome of the main concepts discussed in this chapter were the Incarnation, the role of oral tradition, and Mary, our model disciple. The chapter one test will be Friday, September 7th.  In order to prepare for this test, students should know all of the vocabulary words for this chapter, review their class notes, and also review the corrected chapter one review and study guide.

**Due to mass time being changed to Friday morning, I will not be seeing the 7th grade students for the full period and am postponing their test until next Tuesday.

***All students should continue to work on their FIVE hours of required service for this first trimester.

7th & 8th Grade Religion-Week of August 27th

Posted on Aug 24, 2018

With one week of classes under our belts,  I'm hoping our students feel well informed and comfortable with both the academic and behavioral expectations in the Jr. High.  Letters to the parents regarding the 7th and 8th grade Religion curriculum and required service are available on my blog under Parent Information.  I am looking forward to a successful year with all of my students and am looking forward to seeing all of the 7th & 8th grade parents on Wednesday evening, August 29th, at 6:30 PM, at "Back to School Curriculum Night."

***7th  Grade Religion***

This week, we will be discussing the service requirement of all seventh graders.  We will be starting in our textbook Blest Are We.  We will be discussing the role of the four gospel writers, their individual accounts of Jesus' life, and the difference in each of their writing styles.  We will also be discussing the term "oral tradition" and the role it played back in the time of Jesus as well as the role it continues to play in our lives today.

*Students should continue to work on completing their FIVE hours of required service for this 1st trimester.

***8th Grade Religion***

This week, we will be discussing the service requirement of all eighth graders.  We are currently working on chapter 4 in our Morality book which discusses sin and forgiveness.  We will also be working on a graduation project (hard to believe?!) that the students will have as a symbolic momento of their eighth grade year here at SJF.

The chapter 4 test is scheduled for Friday, August 31st.  In order to prepare for this test, students should review all vocabulary words, comprehension questions, and their completed study guide for chapter 4.

**Students should continue to work on completing their  EIGHT hours of required service for this 1st trimester.

Welcome to the 2018-2019 School Year

Posted on Aug 19, 2018

Welcome back to the 2018-2019 school year.  I will be teaching seventh and eighth grade religion this year and am looking forward to reuniting with our eighth grade students as well as meeting and getting acquainted with our seventh grade students.  The teachers in the Jr. High are committed to creating and fostering a positive learning environment in which we hope to see each of our students grow both spiritually and academically.
The Jr. High faculty is very excited about our new Principal, Jim Fornaciari, our new Jr. High faculty members, the addition of Spanish class to the Jr. High curriculum, and our integration of Chrome books into our every day curriculum.  We will be meeting with the 7th and 8th grade students on the first day of school and will be discussing the behavioral and academic expectations of the Junior High, as well as the directives regarding use and care of their Chrome books.
Effective communication is a very important component of your child's academic and personal success here at St. John Fisher. Please feel free to contact me or any of the other Jr. High teachers with any questions or concerns you may have throughout the school year. I'm looking forward to a wonderful school year with your son or daughter and am looking forward to seeing you at the "Back to School Curriculum Night" on Wednesday, August 29th.  The evening for Jr. High parents will begin at 6:30 in the church with a greeting and blessing from Fr. Ken.  Our Principal, Jim Fornaciari, will then share his vision for the 2018-2019 school year.  Parents will then be invited to listen to our Jr.High faculty share an overview of their curriculum for the upcoming school year, grading policies, and classroom routines.  We look forward to seeing all of our parents on Wednesday, August 29th.
