Mrs. Maura Grochocinski, Junior High Religion

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year.  We are all looking forward to a successful school year with your child. 

A little about myself: due to the difficulty in pronouncing my last name, I am known to the SJF students and to many of the parents as “Mrs. G.”  I live in Most Holy Redeemer parish and my husband and I have been blessed with three wonderful daughters. 

This year will be my 20th year teaching at Saint John Fisher. I have taught different grades and various subjects throughout the years. I have enjoyed teaching religion in the Jr. High for the past ten years, watching our students grow both academically and spiritually.

I'm looking forward to an exciting school year with our Jr. High students and can't wait to see them on their first day of school, Wednesday, August 21st.

7th and 8th Grade Religion-Week of October 28th

We have a very busy week coming up...

Reminders:

Tuesday: St. Rita Retreat. Students are to wear their school uniforms and bring a brown bag lunch with a drink.

Wednesday:  SOAR will be hosting a Halloween activity in the gym.  Any work missed on this day by SOAR students must be made up as homework for that evening.

Thursday:  St. John Fisher welcomes single gender High Schools.  Parents are welcome to attend their presentations.  The girls will be meeting in Mrs. G's classroom and the boys will be meeting in Mr. Gibson's classroom beginning at 11:10.

Friday:  We will be celebrating the All Souls' Mass at 1:00 PM.

* We will also have a short Halloween celebration at the end of the day.  Students may dress in orange and black and may bring candy to share with their classmates. 

***7th Grade Religion***

This week we will be completing our discussion of chapter 4 in our Blest Are We book.  We will be discussing the internal and external distractions that keep us from prayer and self reflection.  We will also be discussing the life of Mother Teresa and her ability to put prayer into action.

***All students should continue to work on their FIVE hours of required service for this first trimester.

***8th Grade Religion***

This week we will be reviewing the four Cardinal Virtues and how they can be demonstrated in our daily lives.  We will also be starting chapter 4 in our Morality book which discusses forgiveness and sin.

***All students should continue to work on their EIGHT hours of required service for this first trimester.

7th & 8th Grade Religion-Week of October 21st

A big thank you to the 7th grade class and to Ms. Chermak for hosting such a beautiful All School Mass this past Friday.  The message of this mass was to use the gifts and talents we have been given by God to make good choices in our every day lives and always remain aware of the consequences of our words and actions.

***7th Grade Religion***

This week we will finish our discussion of the four Cardinal Virtues and will be beginning Chapter 4 in our Blest Are We book.  Chapter 4 discusses the temptations of Jesus in the desert and how Jesus responded to each of those temptations with words from scripture.  We will be discussing the many temptations of seventh graders and how we can use the teachings of our faith to guide us with our response to those temptations.

***All seventh graders should continue to work on satisfying their FIVE hours of required service for this first trimester.

***8th Grade Religion***

This week we will continue our discussion of the evangelization of Christianity throughout Europe and the monastic movement to the outskirts of the Roman Empire.  We will be working on guided note taking for chapter 4 as well as the chapter 4 study guide.  The chapter 4 test is scheduled for Friday, October 25th

***All eighth graders should continue to work on satisfying their EIGHT hours of required service for this first trimester.

 

Religion-7th & 8th Week of October 15th

The Jr. High will be welcoming the co-ed High Schools in our area to Saint John Fisher this Wednesday to talk with our students about each of their school's curriculum, clubs, and extra curricular activities.  As always, parents are welcome to attend.  We will be meeting in church at 9:15.

Reminders:

***The October all school mass will be hosted by our 7th graders and will be celebrated on Friday, October 18th, at 1:00.  All are welcome!

***The Jr. High Retreat permission slips and fees are to be returned to homeroom teachers by Friday, October 18th.

***The Jr. High Retreat will be held at St. Rita on Tuesday, October 29th.

***7th Grade Religion***

This week, we will be discussing the four Cardinal Virtues and how they form our conscience.  The Cardinal Virtues guide us into making good decisions in our every day lives.  The students will be completing an assignment in which they will be asked to reflect upon those people in their lives who exemplify the four Cardinal Virtues and how they can demonstrate the use of the four Cardinal Virtues in their own lives. The corrected chapter three tests will be returned and reviewed with the students this week. On Wednesday and Thursday, Ms. Chermak will be visiting the 7th grade religion classes. She will be working with the seventh graders and will be preparing them to host our October all school mass which will be held on Friday, October 18th at 1:00.

***8th Grade Religion***

This week, we will be starting chapter 4 in our Church History book. This chapter discusses the evangelization of Christianity throughout Europe. It also highlights the monastic movement and the other ways Christians battled the barbarian invasions in the Roman empire.  The corrected chapter 3 tests will be returned to the students on Tuesday.

After studying the history of the Nicene Creed, our 8th grade students will compose their own creed.  The students will be expressing their beliefs about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the Church, and life thereafter in their creeds.

7th & 8th Grade Religion-Week of October 7th

7th Grade Religion

This week, we will be finishing chapter 3 in our Blest Are We textbook which discusses how our conscience is formed and the important role it plays in moral decision making. This chapter also discusses the various types of sin: original sin, personal sin, venial sin, and mortal sin. We will be reviewing the chapter and will be working on the chapter 3 study guide.

The chapter 3 test will be on Thursday, October 10th.

***All students should continue to complete their FIVE hours of required service for this first trimester.

 

8th Grade Religion

This week, we will be finishing chapter 3 in the Church History book.  This chapter discusses the turning point in Christianity when the emperor, Constantine, issued the Edict of Milan, granting the toleration of Catholicism in Rome. This chapter also discusses the ways that Constantine and his successor,Theodosius, embraced and promoted Christianity throughout the Roman Empire. The Four Ecumenical Councils and their impact on defining the fundamental beliefs of Christianity are also covered in this chapter.  

The chapter 3 test will be on Wednesday, October 9th.
