Mrs. Maura Grochocinski, Junior High Religion

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year!  I am looking forward to a unique and successful school year with your child.

A little about myself: due to the difficulty in pronouncing my last name, I am known to the SJF students and to many parents as “Mrs. G.”  I live in Most Holy Redeemer parish and my husband and I have been blessed with three wonderful daughters, a son-in-law, and a new grandson, Martin McGrath Guinane.

This year will be my 21st year teaching at Saint John Fisher. I have taught different grades and various subjects throughout the years. I have enjoyed teaching religion in the Jr. High for the past eleven years, watching my students grow both academically and spiritually.

This week marks the beginning of the second trimester.  I am hopeful that all of our Jr. High students will demonstrate their best efforts and do their very best work in all of their classes for this second trimester.  The first trimester report cards will be distributed to the students in school, on Wednesday, November 20th. If you have not scheduled a conference with your child's homeroom teacher for November 25th or 26th, please do so.

7th & 8th Grade Religion-Week of Nov. 11th

This Friday will mark the final day of the first trimester.  Now that we are acclimated to the routine and academic expectations of the Jr. High, it's a good time to reflect back and think about those habits and actions that were rewarding to us for this first trimester, as well as those things that we may want to change and improve upon to be stronger in the upcoming second trimester.

On Friday, November 15th, SJF students and staff will gather in church to honor our Veterans at a special Veteran's Day prayer service.  All are welcome to attend.

This week we will be discussing chapter 7 in our Morality book.  This chapter discusses the importance of family life.  Family members are those who accept us, love us, and forgive us no matter what, simply because we belong to them and they belong to us.  We will be discussing the values and virtues learned at home and how we carry those values and virtues with us as we go out into society to become a part of a larger community.

*Service hours for the 1st trimester are due Wednesday, November 13th in class.

7th & 8th Grade Religion-Week of Nov. 4th

Thank you to all who attended the Enrollment Mass for the Confirmation class of 2020. This was a wonderful opportunity for our Confirmandi to share their excitement as they prepare for their final Sacrament of Initiation with their parish community.

***7th Grade Religion***

This week, we will be reviewing and working on a study guide for chapter 4 in our Blest Are We book. This chapter discusses the temptations of Jesus in the desert as well as the temptations 7th graders face in their every day lives.  Jesus responded to his temptations with words from scripture. In class, we discussed how we can respond to daily temptations by listening to our conscience which is formed by teachings of the Church, advice from parents, teachers & other role models, and guidance from the Holy Spirit.  After incorporating the Cardinal Virtues into our curriculum for the past couple of weeks, the students will be tested on their knowledge of the four Cardinal Virtues when taking the chapter 4 test which is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8th.

***All students should continue to work on on their FIVE hours of required service for this first trimester.

***8th Grade Religion***

This week, will be finishing chapter 4 which discusses sin and forgiveness.  In class, we discussed the different types and conditions of sin.  The chapter 4 test is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8th.

***All students should continue to work on on their EIGHT hours of required service for this first trimester.
