Mrs. Maura Grochocinski, Junior High Religion

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year!  I am looking forward to a unique and successful school year with your child.

A little about myself: due to the difficulty in pronouncing my last name, I am known to the SJF students and to many parents as “Mrs. G.”  I live in Most Holy Redeemer parish and my husband and I have been blessed with three wonderful daughters, a son-in-law, and a new grandson, Martin McGrath Guinane.

This year will be my 21st year teaching at Saint John Fisher. I have taught different grades and various subjects throughout the years. I have enjoyed teaching religion in the Jr. High for the past eleven years, watching my students grow both academically and spiritually.

7th & 8th Grade Religion-Week of Dec.9th

Posted on Dec 08, 2019

As the 8th graders return to school this Monday morning, the Jr. High halls will be filled with heavy sighs of relief now that the high school entrance tests are over. We are all so grateful to the Kindergarten teachers and students for their visit to our Jr. High hall this past Friday when they gave us their blessing and delivered treat bags filled with goodies and "lucky pencils" for the test. We would also like to thank Mrs. Scannell and the 7th graders for their notes filled with well wishes for our 8th graders.

In this season of Advent, we continue to prepare our hearts for the birth of Jesus by being mindful of all of the ways we can be our best selves.

On Monday, at 1:00, we will be attending an all school mass as our 4th graders host our celebration of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

***7th Grade Religion***

This week, we will be finishing up chapter 6 in our Blest Are We book which discusses the term "vocation" as well as the two sacraments of Holy Orders and Holy Matrimony which are considered to be vocational sacraments.  We will be reviewing the chapter and will be working on the study guide to prepare for the test.  The test is scheduled for Friday, December 13th.

***TEST DATE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO TUESDAY, DECEMBER 17th

***All students should continue to work on their FIVE hours of required service for this second trimester.

Confirmation Sponsor Pin and Card, 24K Gold Plate, 3/4"H : AB1128

This week, we will be discussing the role of a Confirmation sponsor and will be discussing the expository essay the students will be writing about their sponsor. I instructed the students last week to have a discussion with their parents to help them make this very important decision; choosing a role model of their faith whose values and virtues they would like to emulate in their own lives. This essay will be graded for content and grammar and the score will be recorded as a test grade for this second trimester. The students will receive a guideline sheet for this essay as well as a copy of the rubric that will be used to grade their essay.  As this essay is a tribute to their Confirmation sponsor, I am hopeful the students will give their best efforts when composing their essay. This essay is due Friday, December 13th.

***ESSAY DUE DATE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO TUESDAY, DECEMBER17th

***All students should continue to work on their EIGHT hours of required service for this second trimester.

I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving holiday. Before leaving for our Thanksgiving break, in religion class, we discussed the importance of eliminating the distractions that prevent us from having an awareness and appreciation of the many blessings we experience in our daily lives. Our students are blessed with parents and families who show support spiritually, emotionally, academically, and financially. We all should make the effort to say "thank you" for the gifts in our lives that we may sometimes take for granted.

Our eighth graders will be taking their high school entrance exams this upcoming Saturday.  Please keep them in your prayers, praying that they remain calm and confident in their academic abilities.

This week, we will begin chapter 6 in our Blest Are We textbook. This chapter discusses the meaning of the term "vocation" as well as the two sacraments that are considered to be vocations, Holy Matrimony and Holy Orders.

***All students should continue to work on their FIVE hours of required service for this second trimester.
