Mrs. Maura Grochocinski, Junior High Religion

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year!  I am looking forward to a unique and successful school year with your child.

A little about myself: due to the difficulty in pronouncing my last name, I am known to the SJF students and to many parents as “Mrs. G.”  I live in Most Holy Redeemer parish and my husband and I have been blessed with three wonderful daughters, a son-in-law, and a new grandson, Martin McGrath Guinane.

This year will be my 21st year teaching at Saint John Fisher. I have taught different grades and various subjects throughout the years. I have enjoyed teaching religion in the Jr. High for the past eleven years, watching my students grow both academically and spiritually.

7th & 8th Grade Religion-Week of May 26th

Posted on May 26, 2020

We are entering our final week of e-learning and I'm sure everyone is breathing a big sigh of relief. Completing the entirety of this 3rd trimester with e-learning was an unforeseen challenge to us all, but I am happy to say that we learned with it, we worked together with it, and thank goodness...WE ACCOMPLISHED IT!  Myself and the other SJF teachers are so very grateful to our parents for their strong support with keeping our Jr. High students on track with their e-learning.

Please keep our 8th grade graduates and their families in your prayers as they celebrate their graduation from Saint John Fisher this Sunday. Though their graduation celebration will not take place with a liturgy in church, we are hoping all of our graduates will embrace this happy occasion and fill their hearts with the love and well wishes of all of our students, teachers, and our St. John Fisher Community. This will certainly prove to be a memorable graduation (and year) that no one will ever forget!

***7th Grade Religion***

This Tuesday there will be a test on the religion of Islam.  This is the last assignment/assessment that will be given for this third trimester.  Students may use their comprehension questions and notes given to them for this test. Students' service logs should have been returned to me last Friday on the Google form provided on my religion classroom. The Islam test and the service log will be the last two grades for this third and final trimester.  As Mrs. Nash mentioned in her Notes this week, students will have the remainder of the school week to complete any unfinished assignments from e-learning.

If their are any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me through my email. Have a good week!

7th & 8th Grade Religion-Week of May 18th

Posted on May 17, 2020

Thank you to all of our 8th graders who participated in SJF's virtual May Crowning honoring Blessed Mary. Our students did a beautiful job demonstrating their devotion to Mary. A special thank you to Ms. Chermak, Mrs. Maxwell, and Ms. Browne who helped put this beautiful tribute together. We are nearing the final stretch of our e-learning endeavor and it's so important that we finish strong. Students, it is your responsibility to make sure that all assignments and tests/quizzes have been completed and submitted in these final weeks.  Parents, we appreciate your continued support in checking Powerschool and overseeing that our students are completing their work in a timely manner.  Working together, we can make great progress and be much more successful with our e-learning.

This is the final week of assignments for our 8th graders. It is imperative that they finish all e-assignments this week so that we can calculate their third trimester grades.

***Please make sure that you have notified Ms. Browne of any scholarships or awards received so that the scholarships/awards can be listed among the Awards/Scholarships for Saint John Fisher's class of 2020.

***Zoom sessions are held for Religion on Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00-1:30 PM.  Students are encouraged to join these sessions if they have any questions, concerns, or if they'd just like to say "hello!"

***7th Grade Religion***

This week we will be learning about the teachings and practices of the Islamic religion. We will be noting the significance of the Quran and Mosques in the religion of Islam. We will also be going over the five pillars of Islam which are considered to be acts of worship that must be fulfilled in obedience to their God, Allah.

***Service Hours***

All students should continue to satisfy their FIVE hours of required service. Now that we have been asked to stay close to home, there are even more opportunities for us to help out around the house. Please continue to record your service while at home. I will collect service hours through a Google form near the end of the third trimester.

***8th Grade Religion***

This Tuesday, the last assignment will be given for this third and final trimester.  Please use the remainder of this week to complete ALL UNFINISHED assignments in religion class as we will be calculating grades at the end of this week for the third trimester.

***Service Hours***

***Service is 15% of the religion grade for 8th grade.  The "Service Google Form" on Tuesday's religion classroom MUST be returned to me by Thursday, May 21st, or I will not be able to give credit for the 8 hours of service completed at home for this third and final trimester.

7th & 8th Grade Religion-Week of May 11th

I hope all enjoyed Mother's Day and had a chance to relax and recharge. We are so thankful to the mothers of our students for the supportive role they have played with assisting and overseeing our students with their e-learning. I know this is not an easy task, but it certainly is an important one! Parents, please check Powerschool to make sure all tests and assignments that have been assigned to your son/daughter have been completed.

We have been busy planning our 8th grade celebrations and are looking forward to celebrating our graduates.  Again, although these celebrations will not be celebrated in our usual "SJF fashion" because of Covid-19, we are doing our very best to make these celebrations meaningful and memorable for our graduates.

Caps and gowns have been ordered and we are currently working with our 8th graders to honor Mary this month of May with a virtual May Crowing.  Students have been given the necessary information needed to participate on their Jr. High Google classroom streams. Please encourage your son or daughter to participate along with their classmates as the class of 2020 celebrates Mary.

This week we are continuing on with our e-learning and are also making special plans to celebrate the graduating class of 2020.  Although it doesn't appear that we will be able to celebrate our grads in traditional SJF fashion, we are doing our very best to make sure these last weeks are memorable for our grads, showing them how very special they are to us and how much they'll be missed.

*Please note that the essays and resumes for the McElligott Scholarship must be returned to Ms. Browne By Wednesday, May 6th.
