Mrs.Carole Scannell Junior High Reading/Language - 7th

My name is Mrs. Carole Scannell and I am the new 7th grade Reading and Language teacher.  I have been a parishioner for twenty years, and been involved in a few church activities.  I have taught at a few different schools in the past, but look forward to my new adventure here at St. John Fisher.  My five children are all graduates of St. John Fisher which brings me great pride.

Welcome back after a very busy Homecoming Weekend!!!  This week in reading we will cover chapters 11-15 in A Long Walk to Water.  We will have chapter questions and vocabulary, along with our mini quizzes on each of the chapters.  In language, we will begin our work on subjects and predicates.  These two basic parts of the sentence will also stretch out to cover simple and compound as well. We will begin Unit 3 in our vocabulary books this week too.  To remind you, our vocabulary books introduce 20 new vocabulary words to be used in 5 different exercises.  We cap the unit off by doing a writing assignment.  In writing, we are going to work on a poem this week.  I want each of the students to think of one of the many blessings we have in our lives.

Please remember we have school pictures this Tuesday, 10/1, and special lunch on Wednesday,10/2.  Let's have a great week!

Week of September 23rd

Posted on Sep 23, 2019

Welcome back after a whole week of school, and an exciting weekend in our parking lot!  Thanks to the many 7th graders who were out helping build the house.  You have no idea how many lives you have impacted:)

This week in reading we will continue with our novel A Long Walk to Water.  Our two characters Nya and Salva live completely different lives than we do, and we should appreciate all that we have.  We will read chapters 6-10 this week and have our daily quizzes on each chapter.  In Vocabulary, we will have our unit 2 test tomorrow on the 20 words we have been using.  In writing, we are working on our letters to the heads of companies, trying to persuade them to change their advertising!  In language, we are going to start the different types of sentences and practice using them correctly.

Lots going on this week...remember we have early dismissal on Thursday, 9/26 at 1:45, and our pep rally on Friday, 9/27 for Homecoming Weekend!!!

Week of September 16th

Welcome back from a FisherFest weekend!  I would imagine that most of the junior high will be very tired this week due to the excitement of FisherFest....but we are going to work hard!  In reading, we are going to start our novel A Long Walk to Water and go on a journey with our two characters Nya and Salva.  We will go through the plot pyramid and do comprehension exercises.  In language, we will concentrate on numbers and plural nouns this week.  In writing, we are working on character traits with our novel.

Don't forget our guest speaker this Tuesday night... Roy Petitfilis

September is flying by as we see the set up for Fisher Fest in the parking lot already!  The students will be very excited this week, so lets try our best to keep things calm.  In reading, we are moving onto Gary Soto's poem "Oranges".  We will go through the plot pyramid, and compare/contrast what Soto wants the readers to notice.  We will also read an article with the same theme as these two stories. In language, we will finish up with the apostrophe and move onto quotation marks and how to properly use them in our writing.  In writing, we will work from our ideas in the "light bulb" to what was the most exciting part of Fisher Fest.  Please remember to keep the amount of sleep each night a priority!!!

Friday, September13th is a holiday from school due to Fisher Fest...

September 3rd

Welcome back from a long, restful weekend!  Even though our week will be shorter, I know we are going to put a lot of labor into our work.  In reading we will continue with our short story "7th Grade" and annotate the different parts to go along with our plot pyramid.  We will also have our first quiz on the story.  In language, we have moved on to all of the reasons we use commas, and what is  the importance of apostrophes.  In writing, we have finished up our first paragraph on our ABC chart and used Author's Chair to share with our classmates.  Next, we will write from a prompt in our Vocabulary book and write about our character Zheng He.

Don't forget our Back To School Night is this Wednesday, 9/4 and Special Lunch is also that day, 9/4.  Have a great week.
