Mrs.Carole Scannell Junior High Reading/Language - 7th

My name is Mrs. Carole Scannell and I am the 7th grade ELA teacher.  I have been a parishioner for more than twenty years, and been involved in a few church activities.  I have taught at a few different schools in the area, but look forward to my new adventure here at St. John Fisher.  My five children are all graduates of St. John Fisher which brings me great pride.

Week of January 27th

Posted on Jan 27, 2020

Welcome to Catholic Schools Week 2020!  We have quite a bit going on each day of this week to remind our students what a privilege it is to attend Saint John Fisher School.  Each day the students are to perform an act of kindness instead of homework.  A list of what is expected will come home today.  All acts will be written about and handed back in to me next week.

In reading, we will finish The Giver by Friday, 1/31.  That being said, we will begin our Formal Book Analysis today!  I will hand out all of the instructions and a parent letter explaining what we are doing.  We will work on a different aspect of the analysis everyday in class, and then the students bring that information home to finish it up on their computer.  This is a long range assignment and needs to be worked on every single night.  In language, we have moved on from preposistional phrases to pronouns.  We will work on the six different types of pronouns everyday.  In writing, we will take our formal book analysis apart each and every day and do another aspect together in class.  Then the students will take what we worked on here, and polish it up at home.  We will take a break from Vocabulary this week.

Thank you to all the parents who made it to our Open House yesterday.  We were so lucky to start our CSW off with such a beautiful mass together.

Welcome back from a long and busy weekend.  I hope everyone had a chance to discuss progress reports and what needs to be improved and congratulations given for hard work!

This week in reading we are going to read chapters 15-18 in The Giver.  We will work on chapter questions as well.  As we go deeper into the story, I am pointing our important aspects of the plot and character development that will help the students with their formal book analysis.  In writing, we are doing a few different things; we are finishing up our BIO POEMS that will be up for Catholic Schools Week and working on a one pager about Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech about "I Have a Dream".  In language we are working on adverb/adjective phrases to add to our writing.  Finally in Vocabulary, we are ina review unit, going back over the last three units.

Welcome back after a very busy weekend.  Just a reminder that this Friday, 1/17 progress reports go out.  This is a good time to have a discussion about effort!

This week in reading we will read chapters 10-14 in The Giver and do the questions that go along with each of the chapters.  As we go through the characters and the rising action, I am pointing out important  parts so that when we put together our formal book analysis, these will come through.  In language, we are working on prepositions and prepositional phrases.  These help in our writing to bring about more details.  In vocabulary, we are at the end of Unit 6, which means we will have our test on those 20 words tomorrow.  We then go into a review unit which will go through the words from units 4-6. In writing, we are finishing our poems about Saint John Fisher that are going to be bound in a published book.  Next we will work on our paragraph about one of the theories regarding the Nazca Lines in Peru(from vocab. unit).

Week of January 6th

Welcome back to 2020!  I hope all of you had a very blessed Christmas and a wonderful New Year filled with lots of family and fun and sleep!!! Now it is back to routines and rules and work.  This Wednesday 1/8 is special lunch.

In reading this week, we will continue reading The Giver orally and working on the comprehension questions.  We are taking the story element by element to help us with the formal book analysis we will work on when we finish the novel.  This week we should get through chapter nine.  In language, we are working with direct and indirect objects which help out the verbs (which we just finished).  In vocabulary, we will begin Unit 6 today with an explanation of the words and then go through the different exercises in the book up to page 79.  In writing, we will talk about our new goals for 2020 and come up with one word that will take us through the year and what we are trying to accomplish!

As I mentioned before Christmas break, the students need to have their school supplies needed for not only my class, but all of the classes!  Glue, scissors, colored pencils, loose leaf paper etc. Please double check to make sure all of this is available to them.  Another important reminder is to check planners for work that needs to be finished.  Happy New Year
