Mrs.Carole Scannell Junior High Reading/Language - 7th

My name is Mrs. Carole Scannell and I am the new 7th grade Reading and Language teacher.  I have been a parishioner for twenty years, and been involved in a few church activities.  I have taught at a few different schools in the past, but look forward to my new adventure here at St. John Fisher.  My five children are all graduates of St. John Fisher which brings me great pride.

Happy Sunday Evening!  As we enter into Week 3 of E Learning, I just want to set down a few ground rules.  The work that you are handing in electronically needs to be done properly.  I want you to use complete sentences when you are answering my questions.  That means I want uppercase letters and punctuation  This week in reading, we will finish reading Chapters 11 and 12 of The Outsiders.  I will post the questions for you to answer.  In writing, we are going to write a 5 paragraph essay on The Outsiders.  I will post the directions for you to follow.  Finally, we will work in Vocabulary again this week.  We are going to do the review unit which begins on page 119 and goes through page 125.  I will send directions on how to do that.

I will attempt another live session with you on Tuesday at 1:30.  I will post the link on Google Classroom.  The Junior High is going to a BLOCK SCHEDULE which means you will be working on Math, Science, and Social Studies on M/W/F.  You will work on ELA and Religion on T/TH.  All assignments will be posted on Google  Classroom.

Over the weekend, our one and only chick hatched!  Mrs. Nash suggested we call her Corona, and I couldn't think of a more appropriate name.  She is very lonely for all of you:(  Mrs. Maxwell put my video of the chick on the SJF Instrgram page for all to see.  I know these conditions aren't ideal, but we will do the best with what we have.  Look for my directions on classroom for Tuesday.  Work hard and keep smiling!

Good Evening Junior High Parents and Students,

I am writing tonight to let you know that some of the students have not been checking their google classroom.  I have already posted quizzes for chapters 8,9, and 10 of The Outsiders.  Most have checked in, but I have a few that have done nothing.  This will not go over well with your grades, and I will contact people individually.  I have a google meet session tomorrow at 1:30 if anyone has questions or comments.

The eggs in the incubator have been taken off the automatic egg turner in preparation for birth.  The first sign is "pipping" which is the chick pecking a tiny whole in the fat end of the egg.  Once that begins, we will have chicks popping out.  I cross my fingers that the transfer to my house did not damage the eggs...

Hope everyone is doing well and not going too stir crazy!

Good Morning,

I am taking this opportunity to remind all of the students to check their classroom pages.  Each of the junior high teachers will be posting different assignments each day that need to be turned in electronically.  I have quite a few 7th graders who have not taken the Chapter 8/9 quizzes for my class.  Please spread the word so everyone will check their Google Classroom pages.

Since nobody joined my classroom google meet yesterday, I will post once a week when I will gather the troops together again.  You can always email me as well if you have a question.

Good Morning! Just a few reminders to the students...When you sign on to the Google Meet, it is only to allow questions that you have for each of the teachers.  We do not need to hear all  of your music and silliness.  This was set up to communicate with students who have to ask questions, or clarify something.  This week in ELA we are going to work on chapters 9 and 10 in The Outsiders.  I will post questions for each of the chapters on classroom.  I want the questions answered in a complete sentence.  You need to start your answer with the question.  Some of you still have not answered the chapter 8 questions yet, so please so that.  We will also have another writing prompt later on in the week.

Week of March 9th

Welcome back after a very busy weekend! We have quite a lot happening in and around Saint John Fisher this week.  The 7th graders are going to help me raise some chicks!!  I picked up the eggs on Saturday and they are set to go in the incubator.  Lots is going to happen in the next 21 days, and then with God's help, we will have some baby chicks to play with...In class we will read the next three chapters in the Outsiders and have our chapter questions and quizzes. Next week we will start our character autopsies on each of the characters.  In language we are talking about double negatives and conjunctions.  After getting through 1/4 of the formal book analysis, the language practice is really paying off:)  In writing, we are practicing for the Aspire tests, being timed.  I hope everyone had a good conversation regarding the report cards.  Some of us need to put in a little more effort, and some of us can be happy with our progress...don't give up!

Week of March 2nd

Posted on Mar 02, 2020

Welcome March!!! What a wonderful weather weekend we had, and the greatness continues.  We have a very busy week ahead of us.  This Wednesday, 3/4 the Seventh Grade will head over to St. Rita for a unique day celebrating languages.  If you ordered Special Lunch, you will get your money back...the children need to bring a lunch to St. Rita.  Also on Wednesday, 3/4 the students will receive their 2nd trimester report cards.  On Thursday, 3/5 Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held after school.  Please sign up for a spot if you wish to speak with the teacher.

In reading, we have started The Outsiders in class.  This will be our last novel, but not our last short story.  The Outsiders is a story about two different sides of an Oklahoma town and how they learn that even though they look different, they really are just people.  This week we will read  Chapters 2-4.  We have chapter questions and quiz for each of the chapters.  In language, we are working with Adverbs this week.  Adverbs answer how, when, and where regarding the verb.  In writing, we are working on a paragraph about declining fish species. Last but not least, in Vocabulary, we will test on Unit 8 tomorrow.
