Mrs.Carole Scannell Junior High Reading/Language - 7th

My name is Mrs. Carole Scannell and I am the 7th grade ELA teacher.  I have been a parishioner for more than twenty years, and been involved in a few church activities.  I have taught at a few different schools in the area, but look forward to my new adventure here at St. John Fisher.  My five children are all graduates of St. John Fisher which brings me great pride.

Welcome back to the days before Christmas!!! This week is a short one with just Monday and half day Tuesday...I would love to wish you all the most wonderful Christmas ever and a great start to the New Year!!!

This week in reading we are wrapping up Unit Two with independent reading.  The students have four different stories to choose from and write up a little summary.

In language we are working on cause/effect and how to figure out which is which...Because there are only five days left before Christmas/the children are ready to loose their minds!!!

Good Luck with the excitement and enjoy time with your family.  See you next year:)

Week of December 13th

Welcome to the middle of Christmas Craziness!!! There are so many different Christmas activities, I would suggest looking at Mrs. Nash's notes home.

In reading, we are reading a play written by Neil Simon called "The Governess".  This is suppose to be humorous, but I don't see it...What we will see is the elements of drama.  All of the parts that come together to put on a really good play.

In language, we are working with SUBORDINATE CONJUNCTIONS which help bring together the independent clause with the dependent clause.  We will do lots of practicing at the board with partners

In writing, we are taking a break from serious writing assignments and doing lots of fun Christmas things like Christmas in another country, our literary ornaments, and our summaries of classic Christmas stories

Enjoy all of the craziness that is about to happen because it will be gone as quickly as it comes!.

Happy December!  Life is flying by and we are now into our second week of Advent and that much closer to Christmas.  Lots of activities happening around the school so I am going to just talk about ELA..

In reading, we are working on two very different poems.  One is by Yeats and the other is by Poe, and they show us different moods and tone.  We will also figure  out what both are searching for.  We will work on our plot pyramid and our comprehension pieces as well.

In language, we will work on the rules for apostrophes and with the elements of poetry; assonance, consonance, alliteration and repitition.

In writing, we are working on some Christmas fun.  We are finishing up our literary ornaments, and beginning our research on Christmas in another country.
