Mrs.Carole Scannell Junior High Reading/Language - 7th

My name is Mrs. Carole Scannell and I am the 7th grade ELA teacher.  I have been a parishioner for more than twenty years, and been involved in a few church activities.  I have taught at a few different schools in the area, but look forward to my new adventure here at St. John Fisher.  My five children are all graduates of St. John Fisher which brings me great pride.

Welcome to the week before Easter Vacation...the kids(and teachers) are super excited for vacation to arrive!! Until then we have quite a bit to accomplish.  This week we will read a new short story called "Allied with Green" a story about an environmental issue.  We will work with theme, vocabulary and complex sentences.  Don't forget to join us for the Easter prayer service on Wednesday, March 31st and the kids will dismiss at 12:45.  On Thursday, April 1st, the kids will dismiss at 11:30.  I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter and a truly refreshing week of rest and fun!!

Week of March 22nd

Hello Spring!  It has officially arrived and the warmer weather is really being appreciated by all. This week in reading we will finish up our story called "Mississippi Solo" by working on dictionary skills and verb tenses. We will have our test on Tuesday, 3/23.  Also on Tuesday, 3/23 our Formal Book Analysis is due!!!  No exceptions...the students can, of course, hand theirs in early:)  Our next story is called "The Drought" which is a special kind of poem called a sonnet.  Sonnets are 14 line poems originally started by William Shakespeare.  So of course we will try out our skills writing one for ourselves.  We need to keep our eyes on our school work which is hard with Spring Break looming around the corner...but we can do this together.  Have a good week!

Welcome back after a long restful, shamrock filled weekend!  This week we will finish up our note cards for our Formal Book Analysis. That means that the students need to finish writing their paragraphs and make sure everything is perfect from the cover to the indented paragraphs to the rating.  If you follow my directions everything should flow perfectly.  They are due on my desk next Tuesday, March 23rd.  We will go back to our reading series tomorrow with our story called Mississippi Solo.  We will go back to vocabulary and questions like we did before our book analysis.  Because it is 3rd trimester, I expect more from each of the children!

Week of March 8th

This week in ELA, we will be working hard on our formal book analysis.  We have finished  the EXPOSITION, with our three paragraphs on our setting(New York City, Kathmandu, and Mt. Everest) and we have finished up our six paragraphs on our characters(Peak, Josh, Zopa, Su-jo, Holly and Captain Shek).  So this week we will work on the Inciting Incident, the Rising Action, and the Climax.  Each night the students are suppose to take what they have on their note cards and turn that information into 7th grade paragraphs.  When we are all finished with our note cards, the students will have the following week to print everything out and put it into a project folder.  Don't forget to sign up for a parent-teacher conference if you need to speak with me.  Have a good week!
