Mrs.Carole Scannell Junior High Reading/Language - 7th

My name is Mrs. Carole Scannell and I am the 7th grade ELA teacher.  I have been a parishioner for more than twenty years, and been involved in a few church activities.  I have taught at a few different schools in the area, but look forward to my new adventure here at St. John Fisher.  My five children are all graduates of St. John Fisher which brings me great pride.

Welcome back to an almost full week of school.  There is a lot happening, so read Mrs. Nash's notes for full disclosure!  Wednesday, March 2nd is the beginning of Lent which means the students will receive ashes on that day.  Wednesday is also an early dismissal at 1:00 because teachers have a meeting.  A permission slip was sent home for our Language Day at Saint Rita.  Please make sure to sign and return.  Students need to cancel hot lunch for that day because we are having pizza at Rita.

In reading we have finished our note cards for our FORMAL BOOK ANALYSIS, so the students have until Monday, March 7th to complete the assignment.  Please read over and edit where you see fit.  In the directions that were sent home, the order of the paper is explained.  All papers that are early will receive an additional 5 points.  Any paper that is late will automatically loose 25 points.  No excuses for tardiness!

We are going back to our HMH readers and beginning our next unit.  Our first story is called "Never Retreat" and it is an argument.  So we will go over again, what an argument consists of a claim, support, a counter argument.

In language, we will work on subjective/objective point of view.  Subjective is the author's opinion, and objective uses facts.  We will lso touch on verb tenses.

Welcome back to a short week after a very long and restful weekend.  This week we are going to finish up our note cards for our FORMAL BOOK ANALYSIS. Some of you still need to sign the parent note saying you understand what we are working on...look in backpacks!

This week in reading we will do our note cards on the conclusion, POV, significance of title, theme, and  our literary techniques.  If we can accomplish all of this by Friday , 2/25, then I will give the students a week to pull it all together.  I will keep you updated as we go along.

When we get back to HMH, we will start Unit Three.  Our first story starts out with an argument, so we will revisit how to make an argument with a counter claim...

Happy Valentines Day!!  I am sending the love to all of our incredible students:)  This week is shortened due to parent/teacher conferences on Thursday, 2/17.  The students will be dismissed early on that day to give parents and teachers a chance to catch up.  Meanwhile, we forge ahead !!!

In reading, we have finished our second novel Peak , and have begun our FORMAL BOOK ANALYSIS.  Each day we put our thoughts on the board so that all students have the chance to gather ideas for their paraagraphs.  In the afternoon we then begin to put our thoughts into words, typing up our paragraphs.  I am "chunking" our thoughts so that all students can keep up with the class.  This week we will finish up our characters Sun-Jo, Holly, and Captain Shek.  We will also do our inciting incident, and our rising action.

The reason behind "chunking" is to teach proper time management to the students.  They know they have to keep up each day and type as we go.  If they fall behind, then they realize what can happen...lots of work and not your best work!!  Thanks to all the parents who have signed my letter and sent it back to school, if not please do it this week.  Enjoy the long weekend ahead!

Thank you so much for all of your help with Catholic Schools Week.  The kids seemed to enjoy what we had planned.  If possible, we are running out of

Kleenix because everyone is blowing their nose...could you send in another box with your child.  Also, you should have been shown my letter regarding the FORMAL BOOK ANALYSIS.  Please sign and return.  Because of the two snow days, we are a little behind.

In reading, we will finish the novel this week and begin our analysis together.  If the kids write out their paragraphs as we do the index cards they should be able to keep up.  We will put all of the needed information on the board every day.  We will also have our last vocabulary test for the book on Friday.
