Mrs.Carole Scannell Junior High Reading/Language - 7th

My name is Mrs. Carole Scannell and I am the 7th grade ELA teacher.  I have been a parishioner for more than twenty years, and been involved in a few church activities.  I have taught at a few different schools in the area, but look forward to my new adventure here at St. John Fisher.  My five children are all graduates of St. John Fisher which brings me great pride.

Welcome back after a long, beautiful weekend!  This is of course a short week for the kids, but we have so much to do...

In reading, we are taking this week to share our book reports.  Each student was able to choose a book of their choice and they will give a "Book Talk" in front of their peers.  They were all given pointers on what they can discuss with their class

In language, we are reviewing the parts of speech and having a blast at the board.

In writing, we have finished up our three paragraphs on a space mission.

This is a good week to get everything organized and handed in!

Welcome back after an incredible week!  We were fortunate enough to watch our first chick literally pop out of its shell!!  Two more chicks were born over night, so we walked into more morning excitement.  The 7th graders were so kind to everyone who came to meet the chicks.  We also witnessed what courage is with Mrs. Dunleavy's prayer service.

This week in reading we are going to finish up our unit on outer space by watching the docuseries on the Challenger explosion.  This is a creative way to show the students what really needs to be done if we want to travel to outer space.

In language, we will continue to practice our basic skills.

In writing we will do some research on different missions to outer space.

Welcome back from a gorgeous weekend!  Kudos to all the 7th and 8th graders who were able to come to Ms. McAndrew's wedding mass.  All of you looked so beautiful and the boys looked great!  This week the chicks are supposed to hatch so say a prayer that they all hatch.

In reading, we move on to a story called "Dark They Were and Golden Eyed".  Another science fiction story about the possibility of living on Mars.

In language, we will work with verb tense and capitalization.

How can I express my thanks for the best teacher appreciation week ever!  Mrs. O'Connor worked so hard to make everything perfect, and it was.  Mrs. Andersson gave up her afternoon to entertain the troops. The kids had a nice week too, ending with the beautiful Maycrowning.  Everyone looked so beautiful and handsome.  I hope all moms were treated like queens for the day!!  Our time is running out so quickly that before you know it, you will have 8th graders!!!

In reading this week, we go back to our HMH books.  This next unit is considered science writing, so our stories are about outer space.  After our test on The Outsiders on Monday, 5/9,  we will start off with a story called Martian Metropolis.  We will talk about how it would be to live on Mars.  We will have vocabulary and comprehension questions once again.

In language, we are going to review capitalization , root words and types of sentences.

Welcome back after a beautiful First Communion weekend.  A shout out to Gavin Namors who decided to become a catholic and make his first communion this weekend as well.  We have a busy week with an early dismissal on Wednesday, May 4th and a half day on Friday, May 6th after the Maycrowning!  In between, we will get some work accomplished.  Our chicks are in the incubator and they are going to be a week old tomorrow.  Everyone is very excited to watch what happens...

In reading, we will finish up our novel The Outsiders this week and have our final test.  We are also working on a group project called character autopsies.  Each group has chosen one of the main characters from our novel.  Not only will they color a life size picture of them, but pull apart each piece of their character!

In language, we are going to review types of sentences, parts of speech and root words.
