Mrs. Karen Ade, Second Grade

Hello! My name is Karen Ade. This is my 2nd year teaching at Saint John Fisher and I'm very excited to be working with your children in second grade. I grew up on the SouthSide and attended Queen of Martyrs and Mother McAuley High School. I love the Cubs, Notre Dame and pretty much all sports. I have three boys who all attend St. John Fisher. Ryan is in 4th and my twins Sean and Brennan are in 2nd.  I can't wait to meet all of you and I look forward to a very exciting year!

Week of November 18th

I hope everyone had a nice weekend. Report cards will go home Wednesday. Please sign and return the brown envelope. I look forward to seeing all of you at parent teacher conferences next week. 

  • On Wednesday. Please sign your child’s planner

  • Report Cards go home Wednesday

  • Next Monday and Tuesday are 11:30 dismissals and parent teacher conferences 

For the rest of the week, the info to know is as follows:

 

Math- We will continue working on Chapter 4: adding and subtracting two digit numbers. Please continue to practice addition/subtraction with your child. Being fluent in addition and subtraction problems will help the students be successful. Practicing flashcards at home, apps on the ipad or playing Math Reflex online are just some examples of how to practice.

Spelling- The Spelling words for this week are as follows:wait, stay, save, say, ate, rain, safe, day, play, may, friends, since, been, show, and those. If children use capital letters inappropriately, or write letters backwards, the word will be marked wrong. Homework on Monday is 4X each

Reading- The students will be reading How I Beat the Giants and Play Ball. The students should read Play Ball for homework on Wednesday.. Every Friday, the kids will take a vocabulary/comprehension quiz that I will take for a grade out of 10 points. This is the last full week of November and students need to pass 4 AR tests this month. I wrote a note in the student’s planner if they still need to take a test.

Religion- We will start working on Chapter 5: Celebrating God’s Forgiveness. 

Language Arts- We will be finishing our “How to Cook a Thanksgiving Dinner” paper. 

Social Studies-We start working on Unit 3, working together in a community

Science- We will be discussing the parts of a plant

Week of November 4th

I hope everyone had a nice weekend. Happy Veteran’s Day to all our Veterans today.The first trimester ends on Friday and report cards will go home next Wednesday. Please make sure you sign up for parent teacher conferences. A link should be going home this week. Conferences are Monday, November 25th 12-3 and 5-8 and Tuesday, November 26th from 12-2.

  • On Wednesday. Please sign your child’s planner

  • Friday we have an all school mass to celebrate Veteran’s Day at 1:00. All are welcome

  • Friday is dress down for a donation, our school goal is to raise $1200

Reading- The students will be reading paired texts this week. The students should read Taking a Closer Look and Microscopes for homework on Wednesday. Every Friday, the kids will take a vocabulary/comprehension quiz that I will take for a grade out of 10 points. The students did very well with AR the month of October. We started November last week. Even if the students passed more than 4 tests last month they are still required to pass 4 for the month of November. For example if they passed 10 tests in September they are still required to pass 4 more for November.

Religion- We will start working on Chapter 5: Celebrating God’s Forgiveness. 

Language Arts- We begin working on a “How to Cook a Thanksgiving Dinner” paper. 

Social Studies-We will finish working on Unit 2; The Earth. A unit test will be on Wednesday. The study guide and book will go home today

Week of November 4th

Week of November 4th

I hope everyone had a nice weekend and enjoyed their extra hour of sleep. Yesterday seemed like the longest day ever.   Please see below for more details. 

  • On Wednesday. Please sign your child’s planner

  • Special Lunch Wednesday

For the rest of the week, the info to know is as follows:

 

Math- We will have a test on Chapter 3 tomorrow. Please continue to practice addition/subtraction with your child.

Spelling- The Spelling words for this week are as follows:base, pipe, joke, late, robe, cute, mule, wave, tape, fire, call, heard, until, full, and enough. If children use capital letters inappropriately, or write letters backwards, the word will be marked wrong. Homework on Monday is 4X each

Reading- The students will be reading Spiders up Close and Anasai and the Talking Melon.. The students should read Anasi and the Talking Melon for homework on Wednesday. Every Friday, the kids will take a vocabulary/comprehension quiz that I will take for a grade out of 10 points.  Along with our weekly quizzes, we will also be doing 1 extended response question. The children and I will be doing these together for a while.  You will start to see the acronym SLAM. Don’t forget about accelerated reading tests. November is a new month so students will have to pass 4 AR quizzes the month of November (even if they took more than 4 in October)

Religion- We will start working on Chapter 4: We praise and thank God. 

Language Arts- We begin working on a “How to Cook a Thanksgiving Dinner” paper. We will have a DOL quiz on Thursday

Social Studies-We will begin working on Unit 2; The Earth. A unit test will be sometime next week.

Science- We will be discussing the parts of a plant
