Mrs. Patricia Newman, Art

Hello! My name is Mrs. Patricia Newman. This is my 15th year here at St. John Fisher, and I’m excited to be working with your child in Art class this year. I have been working as an art teacher for 30 years. I have taught in the Chicago area and as far away as the West Indies, on a small island called Montserrat. I love art, specifically painting, and my goal every year is to help students find a love and appreciation of the arts for themselves. I have a husband and three married children, and so blessed to have 4 grandchildren!  We are going to have a terrific year!

Hello from our busy art room at St. John Fisher School!
Since the Christmas shopping season has officially begun, I thought I would send a gentle reminder about Artsonia and our wonderful student art work!  Giving and receiving a one of a kind present from your favorite artist is such a wonderful gift for mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, aunts, uncles, godparents, babysitters...the list goes on!   If you can't think of something unique and from the heart for a special person in your child's life, why not check out Artsonia and see what they can do with your child's fabulous art work?  I guarantee you will not be disappointed!  Just go to the gift shop at Artsonia.com.
Remember also that 20% of the sales come back to our school!  It's a great way to buy a special gift but also support our school.  Thank you for supporting our art program and Merry Christmas!!

“The arts inform as well as stimulate; they challenge as well as satisfy. […]This is, perhaps, the largest lesson that the arts in education can teach, the lesson that life itself can be led as a work of art. In so doing the maker himself or herself is remade. The remaking, this re-creation is at the heart of the process of education.”

Quote from Dr. Elliot Eisner, a professor of Art and a professor of Education at Stanford. He was a leading mind in the field of education, winning numerous awards throughout his lifetime.

We've had so much fun creating landscapes, beautiful fall leaves,  and clay projects all with a fall theme.  We've learned about artists Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch.  We are studying line, space, color and value. Beautiful work!

Welcome back to the "New" Art Room!

Posted on Aug 20, 2018

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to Saint John Fisher’s art program.  I am looking forward to having another great year with your student, and hope you are too!  Our art program is studio based so there will be lots of drawing, painting, sculpting using clay and other materials, and creating collage.  We will be learning about famous artists, while experimenting with watercolors, tempera paints, oil and chalk pastels.  Most of all, my goal is for every student to realize their creative side through the projects we will be doing.

Samantha_Matlob

Art is vital to an elementary level education for so many reasons.  Research has proven over and over again that students that are involved in the arts are at a great advantage.  Their tests scores, attitudes, social skills, critical and creative thinking are all enhanced through  the arts.  Art literally encompasses all areas of study, from math to language arts, history and geography.  Art is not just a fun class but one that really helps prepare our students for the future.

Raven

Pre-K has art every week, while students in K-8 come to art every other week.  We split the classes with library.  Grades 6-8 will be given grades on Power School.  The students  will be evaluated in the Successful Learning Traits (SLTs) in 16 different categories.  My expectations for each student is to come to class ready to listen, eager to work on their art project, and above all,  respect his/her  fellow students as well as the teacher.  I expect all students to finish their project whether they are absent or not.

All students have an online art gallery though Artsonia.  You can access the website right on our SJF website under the Art link, or go to artsonia.com All the art work students create stays in their own gallery year after year for you to see and share with friends and relatives near and far.  They also have a gift shop where you can purchase items with your student’s artwork on it.  Items like t-shirts, coffee mugs, key chains, etc.  are available.  Should you purchase anything, 20% comes back to our school!  So it is a great way to brag about your student artist as well as support our school.  If you haven’t already, please check it out.  All our students do amazing art work!

Grace_(5th)Declan_Murphy

I am excited and eager to start creating wonderful works of art with your student!  Let’s all of us together make this the best year ever!

Please never hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns.  Welcome back!
